Hey guys.

Had some questions for you about avoiding injuries in training.

I was wondering, in striking arts like Boxing, Kickboxing, Thaiboxing etc. they use wrist wraps, gloves etc to protect the hands and wrists from unwanted wear and tear/injuries(no shit, haha). But, is it common to do the same with Jiu Jitsu or any form of grappling, namely wrist wraps? Just for a little more support and protection against(heaven forbid) tearing, pulling, twisting, breaking etc something?

I've never seen, in any grappling tournament like EBI, Metamoris, ADCC etc, grapplers use anything to protect their joints, namely their wrists or fingers(well, sometimes tape in Judo), but does anybody do this? And if so, does it help at all?

Obviously in MMA guys wear wraps and gloves at all times, so it's perfectly possible to grapple while wearing them. Would it be a good idea for someone like myself, who doesn't want any kind of bad injuries, to wear wrist wraps for some protection against any kind of bad injuries to the hands/fingers/wrists?

I'll tape my fingers and sometimes my wrists.... You can tape fingers when competing (it helps with grips and not getting your fingers caught up in the gi...... I've seen some awful breaks). This is a common practice in tournaments.

I've taped my wrist in training, but you can't compete with it like that.... They say it can interfere with wrist locks and won't allow it.

Definitely tape your fingers. It will help your grip and joints.

Mishima Zaibatsu @AcidRain obviously you play guitar... Or at least I'm highly assuming because of your avatar... Outside of teaching BJJ/MMA, one of my other lines of earning is being a professional musician (bassist), so I am very protective of my fingers. Definitely tape them (I tape my finger tips, then my fingers together ala Spock "Live Long and Prosper" style)
