'Alex Oliveira vs. Tim Means ended in a no-contest at Friday night’s UFC 207 in Las Vegas, but both fighters disagree with the referee’s decision.

Means believes he should be awarded a TKO victory after landing a pair of controversial knees to Oliveira’s head in the opening round at the T-Mobile Arena, but the Brazilian’s team will appeal the result.

Otavio Duarte, Oliveira’s coach, told MMA Fighting on Friday night that Means’ post-fight interview is enough evidence to show that calling his knees “unintentional" makes no sense....'

Here's another write-up on it I thought was a little better, and included the youtube clip of the Means interview:

good.
it's flat out fucking embarrassing for a fighter, both commentators, and the fucking head of regulatory affairs to not know that a knee means a grounded opponent.

So interestingly enough, the "Unified Rules" posted on the UFC website itself do not appear to include a definition for "grounded opponent":
http://media.ufc.tv//discover-ufc/Unified_Rules_MMA.pdf (PDF) but the Nevada rules say:
"A downed opponent is any fighter who has more than just the soles of their feet on the ground. If a fighter is caught in a crouched position where the ring ropes or the fence is the only thing keeping the fighter from the ground the fighter will be considered a downed opponent. A fighter can be kneed to the body when they are on the ground."
http://boxing.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/boxingnvgov/content/faq/MMA-FOULS_JUDGING_CRITERIA_01-13.pdf (PDF)

When I was checking this, I was most intrigued by the second part, about being considered downed when against the cage if it's the only thing keeping the fighter from the ground. I am trying to think of a good example of when this rule should have come into play.

You would think the UFC would have the rules for a fight in a specific location included as an amendment to a bout agreement, or in a standard info packet given to a fighter once they are officially on a card somewhere. With the rules changing in some places but not others this year, it's something they should consider if they aren't already doing it.

Actually, I changed my mind - the athletic commission should do it when they license a fighter -- isn't that transaction between the commission and the fighter and not the promoter?

It just seems unprofessional on the part of Means, like a total brain fart.

he straight up said he thought they had to have 3 points of contact to be grounded and threw the knee on purpose thinking it was legal

I know, but why was he even thinking that? It's so weird. I checked; this is the fifth time he's fought in Nevada.

so with that admission, in what realm of reality could the outcome of the fight be a no contest due to "unintentional" illegal blows?

I think it's more complicated. The means interview suggested to me that with a no contest they don't get paid. Could be wrong but that would suuuuuck, even means was asking for the DQ instead

Just about every time they bring Ratner on to discuss rules during an event it sounds to me like he does not know what he fuck he is talking about. I have heard Ratner comment and almost immediately after Rogan ask WTF? Maybe UFC told the commentators what Ratner says goes?

I have long thought UFC hired Ratner like a large company brings in an incompetent politician to lobby because of connections. The whole NSAC comes across to me as idiots. Who knows.

Shut our mouths? then immediately It's about the fans without the fans we have no money coming in.

So on one hand shut our mouths about the union and start looking out for other fighters and make more superstars...

But it is ok because him and Dana will meet to talk about how to market Him better.

lol telling the fans to do his job

he mad cause he doesn't know how to promote himself so he tells fans to talk about lesser known fighters, when the fans always have been doing so.

I distinctly remember him saying "If that was illegal I threw it intentionally, disqualify me, don't make it a no contest" (not verbatum) and then something about families to feed and the fans should stfu

Fighter bashing, reported
I expected this from the right nut, but you? :)

I am merely asking a question though. He was invovled in some USADA stuff, and now this? Just makes you wonder what one is willing to do. If it was truly accidental then shut up about it. Don't throw the knees if you don't like the consequences. I am glad the eye pokes, cage grabs, knees to downed opponent are treated more farily, and with more consequence.
