mirroring SuperDave's excellent thread on childhood cartoons I thought I'd make a thread for cartoons I watched here in the UK but posting a full episode of each. I spoke to Knee a year or more ago and named different cartoons I watched and some he'd never heard of even though I thought they were American. Turns out a lot were European or Japanese etc.

Anyway to get the wheels moving I will start with this quite dark cartoon called Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. I loved this cartoon as a kid in the 80's but sadly the toys were shit or extremely hard to find so I'd often just use my match box cars and attack pot plants.

The story revolves around Jayce a guy looking for his lost father who flys with a scoundrel space ship captain and a droid( it's not Star Wars I swear).

Great idea!
I'd love to learn some childhood cartoons from across the pond.
Thanks for the shout out!

Cheers and no worries I love talking about old toons they made my childhood special.

Next up is Dogtanian, this was basically the story of the Three musketeers but told in a world of cats and dogs. The voice acting and production was fantastic for the time and I loved this show so much I bought it on DVD lol

Next up used to be on Channel 4 I think very early ( I used to struggle waking up for school each day ) weekends though when cartoons were on I'd be up stupidly early and see random things like this. "Once Upon a time life" was a cartoon series about how life on Earth but mainly how the human body worked. As a kid I was fascinated by it and imagined all these little characters running around my body.

I couldn't find an embed able video of this one sadly but I did find a full English version of episode 1 here:
Around the World with Willy Fog Episode 1 | Watch cartoon online, free cartoon online

Willy Fog around the world in 80 days was a bit like Dogtanian re-telling a classic tale with animals. Much like Dogtanian the production was excellent as is the voice acting and the suspense right up till the end was fantastic.
As with a lot of these it had the catchy theme tune too.

The theme tune for Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors was memorably shit/fantastic.

Do you remember that other weird cartoon that used to be on around the same time as the human body one - it had two animated kids and a robot narrating over the top of clips of futuristic/scientific educational film (I can remember it used a lot of 80's Japanese robotics clips)?

It could have been Once Upon a Time Space? They did, Life, Man and then Space

I'm not sure if you got this one in the states or not but over here in the UK it was a classic. Ulysses31 about a man who defied petty Gods. He has a badass laser gun/ sword and shield and some of the concept designs in this show were awesome. Sci fi at its best.

Video was deleted sadly will keep lookout for replacement

Mysterious Cities of gold (original, they've since remade it) was an adventure story about you guessed it the search for cities made of gold. As a kid I enjoyed it but it was around at the same time as He-Man and Thundercats and Transformers etc so wasn't as popular but I still watched it. Theme tune is pretty memorable too.

Another euro cartoon I'm not sure if you had in the US although Tom Bosely voiced the main character David in David the Gnome. The Gnome cartoons had great stories and gave me one of my first experiences of death from old age in them. Truely moving in some episodes.

We also had the Wisdom of the Gnomes or secret book of the Gnomes which told the tale of a kind of peace maker in Gnome world, again the stories were great fun

Count Duckula as with Danger Mouse was voiced by David Jason, this cartoon tells the story of a vegetarian vampire duck. I would always watch this show even though I preferred shows like M.A.S.K. And Dogtanian this kind of fell into the comedy pile like Inspector Gadget did.

I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, so we got a mixture of everything. One of the best was Ninja Hattori-Kun. It was only in Cantonese. I found an episode in "English" but I think it was translated in India, as there are a lot of Hindi episodes on youtube.

Plot summary - this blue ninja lives in a nerds loft. The nerd fancies a girl. The girl fancies the blue ninja. An evil ninja also fancies the girl, so he tries to sabotage the blue ninja but blue ninja is better. Nerd has a little sister who dresses up as a red ninja.

Apparently this showed in the USA but I only ever hear Brits talking about it so I'm not sure how popular it was. We only had four channels so it most likely had a wider audience lol. I loved this show, the designs and the silliness of it was probably my first experience of that kind of anime.

Sharky and George the crime busters of the sea. This cartoon came to the UK in 91 I was 10 years old and it was my first taste of detective film noir. At first I didn't know how to take it but it grew on me and I would watch it every time it was on. My friends and I used to joke about how they changed the opening tag line of what Seacago was renowned for.

Teenage mutant HERO turtles. Now I know this cartoon was everywhere but it had a few changes for the UK. We had a female politician complain about all the violent cartoons children were watching from America (which we all loved watching) so steps were taken to reduce them. When Ninja turtles came out they changed the name to Hero turtles as it was less violent and at the time nunchucks were illegal over in the UK, so every scene with Mickey using them was edited out.
