He had his shtick and it was all he could do. He bitched about being asked to do the same stuff over and over but it was all he had in the tool bag.

His "shtick" was coke. Huge, huge piles of coke.

Same with Steve Martin. He got off the coke sometime in the late 80s / early 90s (if I remember correctly) and just stopped being funny.

Yep, I can't fathom the coke budget for Mork and Mindy. Jonathan Winters was a funny man, Robin was just coked out.
