I have not specifically trained there, but I know some of the guys at Raleigh Institute of Martial Arts. I have never heard any bad things about Gracie Raleigh, and I am pretty sure that I have competed against one of their guys at a tournament. Let me see if I can find someone that I know that trains there.

My coach Jon Burke was one of Royce's first black belts.... He was promoted the same day as Rob Kahn, Pat Hawk Hardy, and others.... I'll ask him about this guy

Good luck @Alienator. Hope you find the right, good school. I just started training early this year and it's probably one of the best things I've ever done for myself in my life. I just wish I had started earlier before my body had to go through all the tare.

Instructor's jj looks legit in this vid from 10 years ago. Dunno how much you can tell about his rank at that point, but at least blue, for sure, and in general only more advanced guys are playing butterfly in MMA. Usually a blue will be playing closed guard and using half to stand up. Above all it's clear he understand jj in this fight. I would imagine that since this vid is 10 years ago his black is legit.

My coach said that he sounds familiar, but doesn't know the guy. My issue with him is that he says he's been a Royce black belt since 1999 in his bio..... Royce awarded his first black belts in 2004. My coach lived in LA with Royce for 9 years and was at the Gracie Academy since 1997, he was Helio's translator (he's an American guy who learned Portuguese), He was one of the guys carrying Royce out of the ring after the Sakuraba fight at Pride, he was in the 2004 class of I believe 7 guys who received black belts that day..... And if he tells me that he doesn't know the guy, I believe him.

That said, Brandon Garner has had a decent MMA career, and probably is a legit black belt by now.... Just that he said that he's been a Royce black belt since 99 bugs me.... Maybe he meant he started training then

I can't seem to find anyone who I directly know that trains there. Sorry.
No worries doc. It was something i wanted to look into for keeping myself sharp and something i could do with my little one when she's big enough. :D
