Carrying over another topic from you know where.
Animated series on Prime nominally set in the 1940s but of course not the ‘40s as they were in the real world. Society is more like what we know today, with POCs and whites mingling freely, lesbians lip-locking in public, etc. And no mention of a World War. Also changes some of the legacy characters, most notably Penguin.
For all that, I actually enjoyed it. It gets into the psychology of being Batman and he’s Bruce Wayne for more than just long enough to learn there’s a psycho loose. He’s not quite as violent as Batfleck in Snyderverse or even Keaton in Batman Returns, but he beats what he needs to know out of people.

I'm so hesitant to watch this just because it reeks of woke in the description.

But I love me some Batman...

I approached it with trepidation but ultimately felt the stories rose above the bullshit. And I didn’t find it to be “woke”, really. The criminals aren’t all given excuses for being what they are. The only somewhat sympathetic one is Two Face, and even he’s problematic but they kind of pull a switch on his character pre- and post- disfigurement that makes it work.

I stopped watching after the first 5/10 minutes of the first episode. Alfred's fat, Jim gordon is black, barbra gordon in mulatto, penguin is a woman. In not supporting that shit, and idk if you can tell, but I love me some batman
I understand. I had the same reservations but just decided to not let it bug me and ended up enjoying it. It was harder to do because of the period in which it’s supposedly set. And especially because I’ve always contended that the idea of Batman works better at a time closer to the characters’ comic book origins. But I also knew realistically that getting that and a depiction of society as it was then is never going to happen. They’re going to fuck with races and genders no matter what era they set it in. They could set it in 1863 and they would still write a certain percentage of the characters as POCs and women, and find a way to wedge some homo shit in there as well.

OK, there’s this rich dude whose parents get murdered in cold blood right in from of him when he’s just a kid. He decides to devote his life to fighting crime…
