BOSTON — Two years after bombs in two backpacks transformed the Boston Marathon from a sunny rite of spring to a smoky battlefield with bodies dismembered, a federal jury on Friday condemned Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his role in the 2013 attack.

In a sweeping rejection of the defense case, the jury found that death was the appropriate punishment for six of 17 capital counts — all six related to Mr. Tsarnaev’s planting of a pressure-cooker bomb on Boylston Street, which his lawyers never disputed. Mr. Tsarnaev, 21, stood stone-faced in court, his hands folded in front of him, as the verdict was read, his lawyers standing grimly at his side.

Immediate reaction was mostly subdued.

“Happy is not the word I would use,” said Karen Brassard, who suffered grievous leg injuries in the bombing. “There’s nothing happy about having to take somebody’s life. I’m satisfied, I’m grateful that they came to that conclusion, because for me I think it was the just conclusion.”

I'm only against this because I'm against all death penalties. I'm only against all death penalties because the system is broken by which we identify guilt.

This is one of those cases where I find myself sort of apathetic. If he had been killed by police that night, I wouldn't be angry. But I've got to think spending 21 until death in a prison for the next 70+ years has to be worse than 21-29 or whatever few it'll take to get this penalty implemented.

So I don't think its the worst penalty for him. And it may just make the image of him more sympathetic for propaganda.

I think the criminal justice system fucks up constantly, and for a lot of cases I don't think the death penalty is needed due to all the mistakes, and it's more expensive with all the appeals. This is one of those ones I'd foot the bill for.

I'm fundamentally against the death penalty but not because I have sympathy for criminals.

i was reading a little on this last night, and they said to expect 10 years of appeals before they could even attempt to kill him. also, i agree with you. i've heard of a couple people being killed, and years later found not guilty with more advanced technology.

I oppose the death penalty philosophically and politically, but death for vicious psychopaths is a satisfying idea primally. So I guess it's the corrupt and bungled bureaucratic application of the death penalty that's my problem.

The strangest thing.....I would consider myself the Liberal's Liberal....but I am for the death penalty if there is no reasonable doubt.

I mean ZERO doubt.

He did that to those people and I think he would do it again if he had the opportunity. That makes him no use to society imo.

I'm not very liberal. Well, I am compared to Americans LOL. I disagree with the death penalty for a number of reasons (that I've listed here before)

  • Nothing is 100% certain. Even if you see the guy with your own eyes, there may be an explanation.
  • Justice is about deterrent, rehabilitation and protecting society. Life in prison does all of those as effectively as the death penalty and obviously with more potential regarding rehabilitation. Justice is NOT about revenge.
  • The death penalty is very costly (and rightly so). It isn't taken lightly and requires a LOT of legal work, including multiple appeals etc. It is cheaper to put someone in prison.
  • Capital punishment sends the wrong message. As a society, we agree that killing is wrong, so we should lead by example. Sending the message that the highest form of justice is killing someone isn't a good way to run a justice system.
  • Despite my attempts at logic, I still want violent criminals to suffer. Call me flawed. Stripping their freedom causes more suffering than killing them.
I don't care if a child murder is executed but I just don't see any benefits to capital punishment.

Disagree- Justice IS about revenge in the sense of balancing the scales. Justice is about equality. He killed people and will in turn be killed.

The LAW isn't about revenge. It's about conflict resolution.

No it's not. That's a fundamentally flawed stance.

I'd vote against the death penalty in Canada but if someone were to put Karla Homolka's execution on PPV I'd be like, sounds legit. I don't know what kind of person that makes me.

being a canadian we have never had the death penalty in my lifetime. i generally am ok with this for the same reason as most other people.there are too many people executed that may have or in fact were found to be innocent after the fact.that being said we also have some absolute monsters that are in jail here for life.life unfortunatley only means 25 years later they can apply for parole.there are certain people who should never be allowed to be part of society again and im fine with these people being given the death penalty.there is no way you can murder 49 hookers and feed them to your pigs and them someday be reintegrated in to your society.it is also not fair to the rest of us to have it brought up time and again when its parole hearing time. its never going to happen but the cost of a hearing and the media drama that surrounds it is just a waste of everyones time. sometimes certain people just need to be culled from the herd but it should only be reserved for the most henoius sociopaths who are guilty beyond any doubt. i dont know if the boston bomber falls in to this catagory or not. i havent been following it that closely but there is definetly a time and a place for it

Sorry man. I shouldn't have put that ugliness in your head. As a CDN she's just who comes to mind when considering the notion that people can be atrocious enough that their elimination actually benefits society.

this is true. i can see it being approved if they catch it on camera, or something like that, where there is no doubting who did it. i also could see it in cases of serial killers. jeffrey dahmer kept all the evidence needed to prove his guilt, so i could have seen it in a case like that.
