Charles Oliveira says he will ‘walk forward’ against Ilia Topuria

As another diehard Charles fan, yes Topiria has to be the fav for all the reasons that everyone knows. Still, there are some question marks such as how he looks at LW against an elite LW and one who can also finish the fight standing or on the ground.
Volk and Max may be better boxers but they don’t have the power to threaten Ilia. I think Charles’ kicks (leg, front, teep, knees, obliques), straight punches and clinch are still threats and on the ground, unless he gets rocked and dropped, I’d like to see Ilia try to roll with Charles. Not sure Ilia can hold and GNP like Arman and wants to risk getting caught.
Charles still came close to tapping Arman but still hasn’t looked peak form against him and Chandler 2. He did show improved wrestling vs Chandler but then we saw Pimblett walk thru Chandler. Charles is also close to 36 and still lost to Arman. Was also in trouble in r5 against a Chandler who despite some illegal shots still put him in danger and got demolished by Paddy next fight.
Still curious to see if Charles fights frenetically like during his peak run or more measured like his last 2 fights.

I cant wait til illia is handed his first loss. his ego and arrogance are out of control. he is a firey little bastard but he is getting an awful long way ahead of himself. he defended that belt 1x and started calling out islam. now he is talking shit to khabib . bro needs to pump his breaks a little. his record isnt that good 8 of his 16 fights were vs guys who dont even have a wikipedia page . he fought guys with 14-16 records and a bunch of 0-3 ,0-1 nobodies before he got to the UFC. then he wants a gold star for knocking out damon jackson and ryan hall? a stiff wind knocks both those guys out. he has had about 4 legit fights in the UFC at a high level and its really more like 2 . josh emmet, bryce mitchell ,volk and max. i would like to see charles choke the fuck out of this little spanish sausage and knock him down a couple notches
He KOd the two best Featherweights of all time in back to back fights buddy. I think that gives him the right to be arrogant if thats how he wants to be.
Curious to see the height difference. I think Max and Charles are both 5,11" but Max moves and fights at distance and Charles is gonna march forward with his long straight stuff and try to thai Illia up and rip those knees. Not sure he can take the shots that are gonna come his way though. As good as Illia is, and he is is brimming with confidence, has there ever been a dominant guy at 155 who is 5'5"ish? Sean Sherk?

On paper I think Max is listed at 5’11 and Charles 5’10” and looking at their face off pic from their FW bout, that looks about right but Charles has 74” reach to Max’s 69”.
Charles hasn’t always used his reach well but does have the feels, front kicks and long punches at times ala left hook on Chandler or straight right on Gaethje.
The clinch should def be interesting. Charles wore down Poirier with it and didn’t take that much damage closing the distance or disengaging. He did take damage when just boxing. No secret he needs to be all the way in or out. Topuria is fast enough to catch him trying to close the distance to clinch. M
Yeah I think Shark is the only short guy to do well at LW in UFC.
he might turn out to be a great fighter but how many times have we seen guys come in and have a hot couple years then turn out to be nothing but smoke ? it happens all the time .its retarded to judge a guy who is at the beginning of his career or middle of his career . charles looked like he was never going anywhere at one point . look at him now .anderson looked like the GOAT in 2010/2011 but went 1-8-1nc from 2013 on. cody garbrandt was a world beater at one point so was tony ferguson . i would like to see Ilia have 5-10 more fights before people start drinking the koolaide
Can’t stand him, tries too hard but he is showing a new level of skill previously unseen. But yes time is the biggest teller of the true GOATs. Esp as a champ and defending your title year after year. That is the hardest thing to do and he left FW after only 1 defense despite beating the 2 kings of the div. They aren’t indisputably the 2 FW GOATs though, can’t leave Aldo out of that convo. He is arguably still the GOAT. 9 defenses.
Beating Charles would be arguably the best 3 fight streak tho since this is a weight up although all 3 of Volk, Max and Charles are all on the old side. Still we’re on top of their games or close enough. This Charles def ain’t Champ Charles though.

I don't think you would bet that outcome, just rooting for it.
Think that Charles was pretty much the same one over the last 4yrs or so, or at least not a major dropped off version. That brutal finish though definitely is going to accelerate things. We also won't see near the amount of title defenses than in the past, so using that metric to establish GOATness is insufficient. Current guys make more cash in and out of thr cage and are far more prudent with activity. We will be lucky to see Illia 1 to 2x per year for the next couple. It's why I always have to give Izzy respect. Guy fought a ton, but is an outlier.
