Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Frank Shamrock will exhume himself from retirement to compete in a special grappling rules exhibition match under the Rizin banner, taking on 48-year-old Kazushi Sakuraba inside Marine Messe Arena on Oct. 15, 2017 in Fukuoka, Japan.

“The Legend” replaces the injured Dan Henderson.

Shamrock (23-10-2) was retired by Nick Diaz after a lopsided, technical knockout loss in their Strikeforce main event back in 2009. Now 44, the former Pancrase star — who still hasn’t made peace with Dana White -- will continue a rivalry previously made famous by his older brother Ken.

I like it. I dont want to see these pioneers fighting young killers but I think them fighting one another, and being able to continue doing something they enjoy is awesome. Good for RIZIN for making it happen.

Didn't know what to make of this at first. Sounds great on paper, then saw it was grappling rules, now it just sounds great in general.

Frank allegedly blew his knee out in the Baroni fight (or just prior to it), and for whatever reason, he chose to never have it surgically repaired. He basically fought out his career with a major knee injury. I don't know if he's since had that thing reattached, received stem cell injections, or whatever they do in 2017. I thought Hendo would blow through Sakuraba, but now it seems like we'll have something slightly more competitive.

I wanted to see them fight years ago but them grappling is the best way to go now.
