FRAT w/ Spoilers

So I watched a documentary special on James Dean and realized I'd never watched his final movie - Giant (1956). Dean died in a car crash in 1955 and Giant was released posthumously in 1956. Also starring in the film were Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor so I figured I'd give it a go.

It's a steaming pile of shit. I have no idea why it has received such good reviews. It's generally considered an epic movie - a must watch. It fucking sucked.

The movie was 3-1/2 hours long and it still failed to deliver on any character development. Rock Hudson plays a huge cattle rancher from Texas. Liz Taylor is his wife. James Dean is an aloof ranch hand.

James Dean inherits a small bit of land and ends up discovering oil. He makes it big and becomes even richer than Rock Hudson. Rock and Liz fight a bit because Liz is stubborn as fuck. Rock is pissed because his son wants to be a doctor and has no interest in taking over the ranch. The film spans the entire adult life of the characters and they did a decent job of making Liz look like an old hag even though you could tell she still had a rocking body under them clothes.

One of Rock's kids - who was actually a very young Dennis Hopper (which was cool) - ends up marrying a Mexican. James Dean - now like 50 or something - throws some huge hotel-opening shindig and told his staff not to cater to any Mexicans. Dennis Hopper loses his shit, storms into a ceremony and gets his ass handed to him on a platter by the 50+ year old (and drunk as fuck) James Dean. Rock steps out of the crowd and says something like "You want it here in front of everyone, or do you want to step outside".

They go to another room and fight. Rock wins. Dean was hammer drunk. Then Rock tossed a bucket or something into a wine rack and it causes like 20 bookshelves of wine to domino over and crash all the wine to shit. Pretty shitty engineering of a wine cellar if you ask me. Rock tells Dean "You're finished as a man" or something like that and leaves. Dean opens what I think was vodka, takes a swig and crashes the bottle on the floor. Rock and his family leave the ceremony, and Dean makes a fool out of himself with a speech because he was so fucking drunk.

Rock and his family head home from the ceremony and stop at a restaurant and the waitresses in there didn't want to serve Rock's Mexican daughter-in-law. Rock says "I'm fucking Benedict. I'm your fucking neighbor" and the guy agrees to serve her. Then a family of Mexicans walk in and the store owner tries to kick them out. Rock tries to stop them and the two get into a hilariously-awful Hollywood fight that lasted 7 or 8 minutes. Rock got his ass kicked.

They get home, and the camera pans to a baby crib with two of Rock and Liz's grandbabies - one white and one Mexican. Rock says something like "How do you like that. A Benedict that's a wetback"

Liz tells him she was never more impressed with Rock than she was when he got his ass kicked by the racist restaurant owner.

THE END

I'll give it a 5/10. At best.
It's a notch below "Don't fucking bother"

3-1/2 hours bros.

3 1/2 hours? Christ. Never seen this movie. Hilarious that they had two of Hollywood's biggest secret fags starring in the same movie. Shame they couldn't have gotten Anthony Perkins in the movie too. Imagine the three of them stumbling out of the same trailer in the morning looking like they walked face first into spiderwebs after a night of poppers and pillow biting.

When I was a kid and stayed with my grandmother I used to bring a postcard of him and of Sting to put next to my bedside and she mentioned that movie to me, but I've never seen a single movie of his. Where can I find it? I didn't read your review because I want to watch it and not run into spoilers.

I knew Rock was gay. He died of the Bad AIDS.
I can see Anthony Perkins - although I didn't know that.

But who is the other big meanie? James Dean or Dennis Hopper?

If you want to watch Dean films, watch Rebel Without A Cause or East of Eden. Both are pretty good.

Giant sucked - and James Dean doesn't actually have that much screen time in the movie. He is definitely the 3rd billing behind Hudson and Taylor.

My grandmother loved it. My mother said The Godfather was a “beautiful film” though and they’re related so I probably shouldn’t have trusted that judgement.

Yes! Is it the sort of movie a grandmother shouldn't like then?
It's not dirty or anything. I'm not judging Granny. It's just an odd movie to love. I think it's only popular because it's Dean's last film and he was dead when it was released.

My grandmother was pretty posh so I assumed it was a "nice" film. My mum saying The Godfather was "beautiful" sort of made me think differently though because she's posh as hell too.

Watch it for yourself. It's a good movie. It needs to be watch with that era inn mind. More slow paced, long feature film, like Good, Bad, and the Ugly for instance. Movies were that long.

If you have any interest in foreign/subtitled films, there's a Japanese Wild Ones/Rebel Without a Cause inspired film called The Warped Ones. It's pretty fascinating to see the Japanese take on the genre, it follows this violent criminal who's obsessed with jazz, specifically Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come.

I love old movies. And I don't mind long movies if they have substance.

This one just failed on so many levels. I never really cared about any of the characters. Rock and Liz were great in it, but that's to be expected.

Liz was probably the best character in the film, being a strong-willed, independent woman ignoring the accepted ways of Texas.

The racism ending was just...odd. The film had scenes where Mexicans were looked at as lesser than the whites, but that was never a huge focus of the movie. I don't know - it fell flat for me.

The memory of James Dean far exceeds anything the guy produced as an actor. Many years ago I wanted to see why the guy is so revered today and watched all of his movies, looking for that wow factor that has made him a legend, I was left confused and asking what it was I was missing.

Even Rebel without a cause was pretty average, although possibly a movie that 1950's teenagers could relate to? I would rate that as the best of 3 average movies. East of Eden was a good movie overall for a period piece, but once again I couldn't see what was so great about him in it. And I agree, Giant sucked balls, which is appropriate considering that Dean was rumored to have done exactly that to Rock Hudson.

He was no Marlon Brando, that's for sure.

I hear ya. I dislike Gone With The Wind with a passion, both book and film. Also racism was cringy. Fuck that movie. But, I think those movies should deserve a chance to be watched, especially with that cast.
