Me, I learned how to shoot with a rifle in boot camp when I was 19. I've only seen in the movies, never even touched or seen a real gun before that.

I learned that when firing a rifle at a long distance, fundamentals such as bone support, perfect sight picture, natural respiratory pause, slow, steady, squeeze, and follow-through are crucial which any of this was done incorrectly; the shot will not land where I wanted. I appreciate the ballistic power of it and executing techniques to manipulate a piece of metal to fly far away and land where I exactly intended to. It's an art on its own.

Very similar to other things I've tried in life, like playing the guitar or ju-jitsu, When I use muscle memory to properly execute at the right time what I've practiced over and over and spent the time to seen good results, is very satisfying.

I still own and shoot guns to maintain marksmanship skillset and also very fun. I would hunt and use it for home protection too.

Post some of your gun stories.

I grew up in the country with a redneck dad. He had tons of guns. I don’t have many great memories with him, but shooting guns as a kid was definitely good times. We would sit outside for hours with a box of 22 shells while i shot the gun and he got loaded.

My dad owned a gun store/range when I was a kid so I was shooting guns at 8. He'd get a lot of cops and military guys in there so they'd teach me and give me tips. It was a lot of fun.

Contrary to what lib media will have you believe, being exposed to guns at an early age doesn't turn you into a raving, violent gun nut. I went from about age 15-28 or so without owning or even firing a gun. I don't even hunt, I'll go down to the range every couple of weeks for a laugh now. I get all my bad feelings out by ranting about LIBS ( KWingJitsu @KWingJitsu )

Haven't shot in probably 30 years. When I did it was because my dad took me out with a .22 bolt action rifle and a variety of handgun. Let's just say this was not a sanctioned firing range. He wouldn't let me fire the .45 because I was 10. I pouted, so he said "fine. Here you go" warned me about the recoil. Fired one shot, fell on my ass, landed on a still burning cigarette he had laid down to crack a beer and burned my thigh. He thought it was funny as hell, and basically just gave me the I told you so look while laughing. It was up in Minoqua Wisconsin.

Started hunting with my step-dad and bagged my first deer at around age 6 using a .410 crack barrel. Got my first rifle, a Remington .243, at age 8. By the time I was in middle school I was shooting a .300 Mag and had a coyote taken with a .338 Lapua @ around 1000 yards as a junior. I learned pistols starting around junior high when my step-Dad got me a .38 revolver and would take me out and make me shoot double-action only.

I’ve been shooting basically my entire life. I’ve learned many things about firearms and life on those ranges and at those hunting spots. I only hope that I can pass that on to my son and he gets the same enjoyment out of it.

One of my fondest memories of my father was watching him break down and clean the guns after a fun day of shooting.

I grew up in rural canada.everyone had guns.my dad had a trap line and guide area.it is just what we did.any reason to go up the hill meant we were taking some rifles and stopping on the way back to shoot some targets.if we saw grouse or a rabbit on the way home it was going to be dinner.

I took my dog on an early morning walk a few days back and there was a pheasant on my lawn. Haven't seen a pheasant around here ever. I wonder if it ended up in some transport truck and got carried here. No idea. Likely will never know.

grew up on a farm in rural Iowa, so asking about my first experience with a gun is like asking about my first experience with a blanket.

I was 9 months old when pappy took me to the shooting range for the first time. "It's your right according to the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution," Pappy said (I obv have no recollection but momma recorded a video).

Granpappy held me upright while Pappy explained how to load the chamber and how to point/fire. I may not have been able to walk and I may not have had the motor skills, but god damn it I fired that shit.

Pappy later put a loaded .45 under the pillow in my crib, just in case. "You have a right to defend yourself," he said (again, I know this only bc it was being recorded).

One day I was taking a nap and my mobile stopped playing twinkle twinkle little star. I'm guessing the batteries died. Anyway, I was fucking pissed.

Then the mobile came at me in an aggressive manner. I had no choice but to pull my .45 from under my pillow and shoot that fucking thing. MY LIFE WAS IN DANGER. Pappy immediately ran into my room and saw what a good boy his son was.

He then took me out for ice cream and a new mobile. Best day of my life (apparently).

I remember as a kid making a target out of cardboard with a mate and firing his dads Gat Gun at it from about 12 feet. You had aim about 3 foot to one side just hit the target, and getting bulls eye was just put down to luck, the damn slugs only put a dent in the cardboard and sometimes not even that.

Also, when I was a bit older my mate bought a .22 air rifle, he didn't think it was very powerful so he shot another mate in the arse with it. Turns out it was more powerful than he thought and the slug got stuck a good inch or two into his arse cheek - man that was funny, I still laugh thinking about it.

UK gun stories are the best!

I never shot guns aside from pellet guns, until my step-grandpa passed away 5 or so years ago. He left 15 or so guns to my dad and I, some of them were very nice guns. I have taken them out to the range 5 times or so, and it's fun. I especially enjoy shooting clays with shotguns. They're a bitch to clean so I don't do it very often.

We have a clay range near us that has skeet, trap, and sporting areas. The sporting lanes are over little ponds with trees and brush and it’s an awesome challenge shooting those.

When I was doing SWAP, Sherrifs Work Alternative Program (community service) we we brought to a state police gun range. It was in the middle of the woods and was basically backed by about a 20 foot high wall of dirt. I was glad when the Sheriff said "Our #1 rule here is you Don't shoot Bambi."

sounds fun.
California sux, always have to drive out couple hours to Bureau of Land Management to be able to shoot freely.
The only time I was satisfied was after Halloween, when all the pumpkins are dirt cheap, had 2 truck full and became pumpkin killers.

we also set up can of whip cream and used fire extinguishers, and they're so much fun cuz when you hit, they spray out all that white shit.

I always wanted to go shoot at Hickock45's range,

I grew up in Vermont. My parents gave me my first rifle for my seventh birthday. My dad taught me how to handle a firearm. I grew up deer hunting and got my first one with a lever action Marlin 30-30. I still have that gun.

I've hunted bow, rifle, and muzzleloader for many years. I got into handguns in my mid twenties.
