With big business taking advantage of labor, he said, it’s up to him to help even the scales.

“If I have to start that fight focusing on my industry, which is MMA, then I’ll do that,” Fitch (26-7-1) told MMAjunkie. “But this is not just a selfish thing for me to make more money.”

Of course, as one of the lawsuit’s original plaintiffs, Fitch stands to benefit if Zuffa is found to have engaged in anti-competitive practices. But he said any potential gains are offset by the ancillary costs to fighting the industry-leader in the courtroom.

“One of the big things I learned listening to the NFL player’s association was that people who lead their industry in pushing for labor equality are usually ostracized and take the most heavy losses,” he said. “For people to think that this is something I’m doing for me, they’re crazy.”

The lawsuit currently is in federal court, with Zuffa awaiting an answer on a motion to dismiss. Lawyers representing the parties are locked in a bitter dispute over the evidence to be admitted in the proceedings.

Fitch, who’s fought for titles in the UFC and the WSOF, said he could’ve simply “played ball” and tried to win another contract with Zuffa. But instead, he’s chosen to stand up for himself and other fighters.

“I’ll fight until my death to support their cases and their causes,” he said. “I’ll fight for Jon Jones. I’ll fight for Nick Diaz. I’ll fight for those guys, because I’m closer to them than I am with most other people. No one else is going to stick up for fighters, so I’ll put myself out there to do it.”
