Keyboard Kimura: No tension between UFC title opponents Lawler and MacDonald

BY E. SPENCER KYTE, KEYBOARD KIMURA MARCH 24, 2015
As the animosity between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor plays out for all to see on the UFC’s Embedded series chronicling the UFC 189 press tour that kicked off on Monday, the two combatants that share the marquee with the featherweight rivals on July 11 in Las Vegas and join them as the press tour rolls through Toronto on Friday are decidedly more low-key about being in the same space as one another in advance of their championship encounter this summer.

UFC welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler and No. 1 contender Rory MacDonald dropped by The Province offices on Tuesday to begin promoting their clash at UFC 189 and unlike Aldo and McGregor — who can’t be in the same room for more than a couple minutes without launching verbal haymakers at one another — there is no discernible tension between the two.

“This is our first day and I get along fine with Robbie; he takes the same approach as me,” MacDonald said of spending an extended stretch of time making the media rounds with the man he’ll face inside the Octagon in four months.

“It’s going to be nice to have him carrying the show and doing his thing,” Lawler said of McGregor, the Irish challenger that has risen to stardom in less than two years thanks to his talents inside the UFC cage and his unmatched charisma when the camera is rolling.

“I’m excited for it. When someone brings that much enthusiasm to the table, it’s contagious, so it will do a lot for all the fighters on the card,” Lawler said, adding that he’ll happily allow McGregor to do the heavy lifting on the promotional front.

Neither man courts the media nor do they crave the spotlight. For both men, fighting is a passion and it’s the competition on fight night and the journey to get there that interests them most....

Nice to see them giving Conor some props for promoting, instead of hating on him for trolling or stealing the spotlight.
