Floyd Mayweather Jr. will reportedly return to the ring to take on UFC star Conor McGregor in a billion-dollar boxing match in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to the Sun’s James Beal and Matt Heath-Smith, the two parties have been negotiating for a while and agreed to the fight earlier this month but still need to settle the purse and paperwork.

I doubt it will happen, but everyone throwing shade is acting like only Rampage can fight for another org while under contract.

There are many reasons why this is bullshit and won't happen. Strongest being...

A) Conor's UFC contract won't allow it.

B) No commission in the United States is going to sanction a bout between Floyd Mayweather - possibly the greatest boxing talent of all time or at least in many many years - and a guy who has never had a pro boxing bout.

There's a better chance of Conor fighting Werdum for the HW title than Mayweather/Conor in a boxing match.

Clickbait.
Agreed, but it's an interesting thought. Two guys that masters at self promotion, and appear willing to fight the Zuffa machine. Is McGregor willing to fight his contract in court? I posed that question a while back.

I thought they would co-promote, and after Conor learns the ins and outs he'd start his own MMA promotion.

B) They would sanction it because Conor has combat experience and knows what he is getting himself into. They sanctioned James Toney vs Randy Couture, despite Toney have never fought in MMA, and that was their cited reason.

Negative. Boxing is handled differently than MMA as there is a much more established ranking system. A big difference is that a boxer can use his entire skill set coming over to MMA (as limited as that may be) but an MMA guy can only use a small percentage of his skill set coming over to boxing.

So no, this would never be sanctioned anywhere in the States, which the possible exception of Texas. Las Vegas? Not a chance.

I figured this would be unlikely. Maybe Mayweather is using this as a way to promote his 50th. He recently trademarked "TMT 50", which sounds like a Money May version of UFC XYZ, which would be an interesting way for him to promote his next fight.

Pretty sure the hardcores knew it wouldn't happen, but some casuals probably got excited.

What about a boxing fight, where they would allow clinch work like dirty boxing but and the ref wouldn't instantly separate them. Would Floyd still easily win?
Easily. People forget that Floyd is a genius in the clinch, he knows every trick in the book. Floyd ate guys alive in the pocket.

That was supposed to be Ricky Hatton's big advantage, but even he said Floyd was much more slippery on the inside than he thought he'd be.

What Ted Williams' head @DannyNL said, plus Floyd would pretty much have his own ref who would separate them for sure.

yes.... conor wouldn't stand a chance... only if they allowed it to be kick boxing would conor stand any chance at all in any ring against floyd without grappling

If toney vs couture happened, then why not this?

Floyd could pay off the ufc and commission.

I believe this fake news story was a hype meter... to see how much hype it generates and get a feel for the numbers and if it generates enough buzz then why not?

Money makes the world go round.
