I hurt my left knee grappling with one of our fighters tonight. It folded inward with my heel trapped on the mat, there was a loud snap, and I was writhing on the mat sounding like Ned Flanders screaming. I can walk on it, but I have significant looseness on the inside side of my knee, with tenderness along where the MCL is supposed to be. I am working on getting arrangements made to get it looked at in the next day or so. Hopefully nothing is actually torn, or if there is a tear it is just the MCL. Just venting here, if I complain to anyone besides my wife in real life I will get the "well that's what you get for that stupid fighting stuff, why don't you quit and blah blah blah" speech.

Could he the PCL by your description but hopefully not
Indeed- hopefully not. I am going to think optimistically that it is MCL alone at worst until proven otherwise. PCL tears almost always are accompanied by other ligament injuries, and therefore surgery. No thanks. Time will tell...

Damn Brotha, keep your head up.... You better than everyone else will know how to manage your injury, but it's the mental stress that will upset you the most. If you can, still go in and watch and learn techniques, and when it starts feeling slightly better, start practicing what you can.

That is the plan. My sports medicine buddy is going to take a look at it this afternoon and we will go from there. I will be at classes watching (and coaching the kids class from the sidelines), it was not easy to carve training time out of my day, if I don't go watch when I am injured I am afraid other things will start to creep into that time, and I don't want my wife and kids to use my injury as a reason to take a break from training.

Good news, it appears to be only a torn MCL. The other ligaments look ok, and the medial miniscus does not seem damaged at this point. That means no surgery, simply a brace and PT. I will be a spectator at BJJ for at least three weeks, but should be able to start drilling after that. The sports medicine group I go to has a former D1 wrestler as one of their knee surgeons, and the physical therapist that saw me with the group today is an Alliance brown belt so I got very helpful, specific advice as to how to go about restarting warmups, drilling and rolling.

Lucky you... (relatively speaking).

I was just discussing this injury with someone.
