Should be in the grappling forum, but some people don't watch that one.

Anyway, I watched this on my lunch break today:

EPISODE 1:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCMcBglAkHQ

Highlights:
TONON: Shown practicing striking, discusses preparing for transition to MMA. "I'm workin' hard. I suck, you know, but, uh, we're gettin' better every day. So, uh, I'm very excited to do my striking training. It sucks getting hit in the face, but hey, it's part of the game."

DANIS (2:39):
On transition to MMA: "I'm the only real money fight in jiu-jitsu, so I kind of feel bad leaving...." Talks about how things are changing faster than he'd originally planned, so he might come back and do more jiu-jitsu after transitioning to MMA.

On previous match with Tonon: "I'm a different animal than I was then...I'm gonna f*ck him up real bad...he's a one-trick pony..." but he respects that Tonon's team talks shit and backs it up.

***STRAUSS (4:47): This is by far the best segment. Strauss tears decks of cards. He shows training equipment he has in what looks like his garage. He talks about anvils and the importance of working on different types of grips and doing the correct strengthening exercises. Also lifts heavy weights near his feet while barefoot. Highly recommend.

SHIELDS (7:26): Training for an mma fight is more stressful than grappling. Talks about previous Polaris match with AJ Agazarm, and how he was surprised to find he was cheered by the crowd when he slapped at AJ. Talks about Danis being a baby about losing.

EPISODE 2:

PICKETT:
Brad Pickett talks about how he learned submissions through learning submission defense. He believes a lot of his submissions came from people who were getting beaten giving up submissions because they wanted out. Feels his ground game is very mma-based, but has been working on the transition, learning new stuff, and going to 10th Planet to learn more about leg locks. Plays with a cute little dog.

HARRIS (3:24): Loves golf. Thinks he is at risk of being on the bottom for this match, but not sure because Brad won't be able to use punches to set up his wrestling, and Harris has a judo background. Thinks being out of mma and in jiu-jitsu longer gives him an advantage. Seems like a nice guy.

SHAOLIN (5:44): Has a dojo, and lots of students competing in the New York Open. Has other coaches helping. Trying to stay injury-free. Has been following Uno since 1999, respects him, is excited. Seems like a nice guy.

EPISODE 3:

SHIELDS:
Talks about moving to NY to train at Renzo's with Danaher and how great a coach he is. Sounds like he agreed to the match with Strauss without really knowing much about him, and then looked him up. Thinks he moves well for a big guy. Needs to watch more film before the match, since he was just focusing on his mma fight. He doesn't go into bjj matches with as much of a strategy as mma matches because they're just fun for him.

STRAUSS (2:06): Shown playing Mario Kart. Honored to grapple with Shields -- Shields hasn't talked any shit, so he doesn't have to. Shown teaching no-gi grappling program -- Raspberry Ape. His students are starting to enter and win small tournaments.

PICKETT (5:32): Talks about his career, how he tried flyweight but the competition was too small and fast, and would just keep hitting him and running. He's really frank about everything, and I really enjoy listening to him talk about his experiences.

HARRIS (7:49): Talks about starting with Judo as a child and teenager. Went to mma because when he was offered a match, they said they would pay, as opposed to Judo where he had to pay. Compares himself to Pickett, knows Pickett's style very well. Discusses the advantages and disadvantages each of them have.

Seriously, everyone should watch the first Strauss segment. I don't know much about his background, but I really like him here. Here it is timestamped.

And what I didn't say before about the second one -- he talks about hoping to show that you can spend most of your time in a small gym rolling with your students and still compete at a high level, without going to a superteam to roll with the top guys.

AJ never disappoints.

Does he really want to tangle with "Fairy Tonon" and "Fake Shields" again though?
Best part of the show by far. I give him credit for wanting to take them on again even though he'd probably be ragdolled, and we know he'd make it interesting leading up to the matches.

Uno and Shaolin was super fun. Time for Pickett and Harris.

I'd like to see more MMA guys kind of go this route if they feel the need to still compete.

Split decision Harris. Nice sharing of water there though. Great sportsmanship. Phil was right in his first prediction that he'd be on the bottom most of the time.

Tonon came to win, Danis came to survive and say "he didn't tap me this time." He's all hype. He had nothing to offer against Tonon.

This event left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it's the main and co-main that weren't that special for me, but it wasn't very interesting. At least it wasn't full of draws. There were a couple good matches, but less than half of them for me.

Had really not idea who Danis was before he signed with Bellator and began to run his mouth. I've tuned in to watch him grapple 3 times since . He is 0-3 and hasn't shown me much at all in those matches.

Sub only events that don't have many subs always bother me. There were a lot of fun scrambles in some of the matches but when someone plays too defensively in this kind of ruleset it's super frustrating. The closed guard game from Strauss and Danis just trying to avoid things instead of doing any attacking on his own kind of brought me down.

AJ/Cooper was pretty good and that was a slick transition and choke from AJ.

Uno going out with his eyes open was uncomfortable but both he and Shaolin were getting after it.

I only got to see part of it (my son has been practicing his unblinking stare thanks to Where the Wild Things Are and somehow got his dad to say we would take him to "Old McDonald's"). I'll have to watch the rest later. Sounds like it might not be worth it though.

They really need to employ the EBI rule set! I loved watching some grappling but man the EBI events are just that much more exciting since *everyone* is looking for the finish rather than one going for the sub while the other is being super defensive.

Also what was up with the crowd? I understand having some fun but it became annoying and disrespectful towards the end there.
