I thought that I was pretty comfortable playing from bottom half guard; but getting stuck in bottom half at the tournament this weekend suggests that I am not quite as good at half guard sweeps as I think. Help me out by posting your favorite 1/2 guard sweeps and tips here; next few months I am going to be drilling this position hard.

If I get a chance tonight during my class, I'll try to video some techniques and post them here for you

Coming off a 4-year layoff and being a smaller guy, this thread has the potential to be manna from heaven for me! I'll refrain from posting random sweeps from youtube.

does Deep Half work? Look into the Faria sweep. I love that position/sweep

I have a bunch. I've been hitting this one a lot. Simple, but Loads of little details.

I love this series from Roberto "Gordo" Correa, the Inventor of the Half Guard.

I just started Ju Jit Su and I didn't think before but half guard is one of my favorite positions. I know I have waays to go but as of now, I feel like I have the most options from half guard.

Half guard is always comfortable for the new guys, especially bigger guys. When you learn more and become more flexible you will find it less enjoyable.

I like the electric chair sweep the best. Really stretches people and have gotten big guys to tap before I pass leg over head. Basically the banana split wrestling position.

Half guard is quite a variable position. There's a classic half guard system that I call 1-2-3, 1-2-3.

1) Secure leg ride/lock down.
2) Get under hooks, or at least an underhook on the same side as the leg ride.
3) Shrimp or leg lift onto your side.
---------------
1) Threaten the back take.
2) If they whizzer hard, roll them over (Plan B).
3) If they keep their weight back, get to your knees and wrestle them over (old school).

I just pulled this series off at the London Open at the weekend in the absolute division against a guy who won gold 2 weight classes up and won the match.

There are lots of different types of half guard like deep half, quarter guard, underhooking the opposite leg for electric chair, kneebar etc. I really believe in systems rather than single techniques.

I dunno man, as a smaller guy and not so new to bjj, I find I end up in half guard A LOT and as a transition position, it's invaluable to me.

I guess against bigger guys you cant lock up full guard against. Most smaller guys I roll with use berimbolo or some crazy inverted Miyao brothers shit.

Yeah man, I took a 4 year break (injury) and now it's like, what the hell is all this???
I still look at bjj from practical perspective so I'm not too keen on that stuff....or maybe I'm just lazy :/

Yes this is my go to as well. I like to rake the leg straight and come up to wrestle for the single or do the plan b like you mentioned. The switching the leg then raking the leg works against anyone big or small. If they don't straighten their leg their knee goes click click.

That is the game I usually play. For some reason I have suddenly had problems getting flattened out and not being able to get up on my side. I think part of my problem recently has been I fight too hard/ too long to prevent the person from passing to half, and miss the easy opportunity to get the underhook.

Do you use the whip up? It's a helpful technique to get onto your side, especially with bigger guys

You can also use your free leg to "kick" in mid air to get the momentum. If i can get even part of an underhook I feel that kicking up and backing the top half of my body away, creating space, works in many situations. Stopping the cross face is the main deal breaker for me. If I can stop it and get the underhook and get on my side i'll probably get the sweep. A hand on their bicep works pretty well in most cases to stop the crossface.
