So, I started training ju jitsu this year, nursing a shoulder that had surgery but been going consistently. My daily schedule got little busier so I couldn't make it to my usual classes and only time I have is to make it to the No-Gi classes. So I was kind of excited, ordered couple rash-guards online to rotate them day after day. I never knew rash guards were so expensive. You are paying for sweat proof tight shirt for about 50 bucks each.
So I went to the No-Gi class and it was fun. little bit more physically demanding but I liked it because it reminded me of a hard wrestling practice.

After the class was over, when everyone lined up to thank the intructor and shake hands, our MAIN instructor (the owner) interrupts and gives this whole shpill about how we look like Christmas trees or what not, Everyone is wearing whatever they want, there is no uniformity, even if we wanted to compete the ones we were wearing are not allowed and so on. And he wanted everyone to own the Rash-guard they sell with their logo on it (their rash-guard has belt color on it) and told us unless we're wearing the Uniform, we can't train no-gi. WTF!! It's like the UFC and Reebok uniform shit.
I guess I'm more angry about the 100bucks I've spent and top of that gotta spend another 50!!

I don't know what the big deal is, why do we ahve to look alike when we're just training? but are any of you who train BJJ, at the place of your training do they enforce shit like this? Is this a common thing?

I mean, on one hand I get it... You want to rep your academy, you want that camaraderie of teammates that are flying your team colors.... But on the other hand, it's not a deal breaker in terms of letting your guys train.

That said, it's nothing like the Reebok sponsorship thing in the UFC, they're trying to cash grab. This is a gym owner trying to get everyone to rep the team, it's common in most gyms

Almost all of the martial art business courses/gurus advise owners to have uniforms- both as an income source and to maintain a "professional" appearance when potential clients (read "parents") look at the classes. Our school is very laid back about this, and people wear all sorts of Gi's and rash guards. I make a point of wearing a gi with school and association patches to competitions, and a rash guard from one or the other for no- gi competitions.

I get the patch with the gi, but demanding a particular rashguard?! That's a blatant money-grab.

I've never experienced that anywhere. Sure, it's nice to have a team rashguard and/or pair of shorts for no gi, but it shouldn't be mandatory for training.

Plus, when it comes to adults rolling, nobody should give a fuck about what parents think.

He might've felt a little insulted if they're 25 guys rolling, & no one was repping the team. My instructor lets you wear whatever you want, & never pushes product. I respect that fact, & make a point to buy & represent the team. I hope your instructor relaxes the dress code. Crazy rash guards make rolling more fun.

I wore something like Bright green hypnotik rash-guard, but I didn't really notice too much about others. Lot of people were wearing the ones with the school logo on it. The No-Gi class is pretty big though. Even the Instructor that was actually running the class had like WTF look. The Owner is pretty young though. He's well known in the JJ community but I think he lacks life experience. he's only 29.
