"Holly [Holm] is gaining some fan support, and as far as the locker-room goes, we can't get behind her because she's not telling the truth, that there is no validity that I'm willing to sign off on - and I'm happy for someone to come in and disagree with me, tell me where I'm wrong," Sonnen told Submission Radio. "But there is no validity to any of her world championships, let alone some ridiculous claim of being a seventeen-time world champion."

Holm, 9-0 in her mixed martial arts career, who amassed a 33-2-3 record in boxing and defended her titles 18 times over three weight classes. Her last loss was a KO to France's Anne Sophie Mathis. She avenged the loss a year later. Her accolades include winning the IBA Female and WBF Female Light Welterweight titles, the WIBA and NABF Welterweight titles.

Nevertheless, Sonnen revealed that Holm's reign holds about as much validity as thumb wrestling would.

"I can go open the door to my garage right now, invite all comers, and then put a belt around whoever wins and call it the 'world championship'. And I mean that kind of stuff happens all the time. You see it in arm wrestling. There's a world championship for some game called 'cornholing', which is like some Midwest version of horseshoes. There's world championships for thumb wrestling, and there's no validity to this stuff. There's no validity to her being a seventeen-time world champion, and I don't believe as an analyst that there's any validity to any, zero of her championships. I don't know one tournament that she ever entered where the entire planet was welcome to enter, and they whittled it down with a competitive architecture known as a bracket, and one person was left standing. I don't know of it."

He just gives off a slimey salesman vibe. Even I get caught up in it. I like listening to him sometimes - for example he was on Steve Austin's podcast recently. That was cool. But then toward the end Chael was clearly embellishing - I mean working - about shit that I knew did not happen the way he said it did.. and his tone of voice, everything about him, was just so full of shit, in the middle of this normal conversation

Yes he's a worker, I get it, I'm getting worked. Doesn't mean the dude isn't phoney, as in you gotta wonder what the hell he ACTUALLY thinks. I doubt half the shit he says he believes.

It's weird. I like Chael then sometimes I hate him. Maybe he's just the best worker ever

I rated this post with rainbows having nothing to do with optimism.

Sonnen might be right. I don't know enough about women boxing to say he's not but if it was easy to be a world champion everyone would be one. There are many more boxers in the world that will never hold a title, male and female, than those that do.

Chael is right in the sense that the whole "18 time champion" or whatever they say, certainly makes Holm sound like she's a world destroyer who beat the best competition across the globe for years. Like she's the female Mayweather, some undefeated god type of fighter. When really, she just fought bums in New Mexico, a lot. The talent pool in women's boxing is very shallow in general.. Holm beat some good comp I guess but there are not too many of her wins that you'd really celebrate, per se.

Exactly this. Woman's Boxing isn't established yet. Not like Judo say where they have an extensive world class field. Once it's been on the map for another 30/50yrs it will be a different story. Compare the London 2012 Games for female Boxing to the Judo, huge difference in abilities. There are some outstanding female athletes. Just that there will will be sustantionally more in years to come (obviously) sorry, very long winded to agree with you sir.

Lol, you're talking to the long winded king. Agreed though. There's a few female boxers through history like Rijker, Wolfe, etc, who deserve a ton of respect. In my opinion, Holm is nowhere near as skilled as either of them, but it's not like Holm was ducking anyone really like Laila did. Holm fought pretty much everyone at her weights - but the thing is, everyone = no one. There were not many people to beat.

The fact someone as credentialed in boxing as Holm is, has looked as terrible in her first 2 UFC fights against hobbyists like Pennington (and I'm a fan of hers don't get me wrong).. says to me, she is nowhere near as skilled as her resume has you believe. Yeah Holm was KOing scrubs in the regional level of MMA.. but she could barely pull the trigger - actually, she didn't - in either UFC fight she has had. She put on 2 of the dullest, most mind numbing and bad performances I've seen in a long while. Almost frustrating because you expect her to be offensively aggressive and go for a finish.. and instead she ran in circles all night while throwing out telegraphed pitter patter strikes, yelling HA!!!!!!!!!!! every 2 seconds.

The 18 time boxing champion can't even slightly hurt Pennington or Reneau.. when you realize those women have only been training/fighting a few years, and the their fight took place entirely on the feet with Holly and Holly looked as bad as she did? I think that says a lot about the state of women's boxing.. when the supposed best p4p woman comes into the UFC against women with like 6, 8 fights total in their entire lives, and Holly can't do a thing to them except play keep away.

List of current female world boxing champions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

She won super lightweight to super welter. However, if you think women's mma is thin, women's boxing is a post apocalyptic wasteland with none of the fun ghouls from Fallout.
