For those of you that live in 3rd world countries like anywhere that isn't the real America, the Rooney Rule is in the NFL and basically says you have to interview at least one minority candidate before making a decision on hiring a new head coach.

I understand it's heart is in the right place, but if you have your guy, you have your guy. Look at The Raiders. Gruden was there before. Gruden won a Super Bowl. Gruden has a great grasp of the game. Seems qualified enough, and its been out there or weeks that he and the Raiders were working on a deal for a reported 10 million a year.

So, if I am a respected coordinator, offense or defense, who happens to be black, am I even going to waste my time going to LA to give pointless lip service when I know damn well I have no chance of getting the job as it has basically already been bestowed on Gruden? Hell no.

What if Belicheck decided he didn't want to work in New England anymore? What if he decided he wanted to take an HC position in Arizona, and made it clear that that was the case? Who the hell is going to interview with the Cards if they know they have a deal in the works with arguably the best coach (God I hate saying that) in NFL history?

It's just fucking stupid.

I agree that it's often a waste of time when the team already has someone in mind for their coach, but I still think it has some benefit. Just going through the process can be worthwhile for the prospective coach, and if he impresses the team during the interview word can get around fast that "If we didn't already have our guy, we would have considered him." Without the Rooney Rule, that conversation doesn't take place.

I think the NFL had a total of 6 black head coaches in the 50 years prior to the Rooney Rule. That number has tripled since 2003, and there were 8 minority head coaches this past season alone. It can be debated that this spike was simply due to a change of culture, but if you are looking for a catalyst that might have caused the sudden increase in minority head coaches it's pretty hard to ignore the timeline of when the Rooney Rule was implemented.

What do you have to lose by taking the interview? You get your name and resume moving in the right circles. So what if the Raiders aren't going to hire you, you don't think you'll come up in conversation between Mark Davis and other owners?

I'd love to be known as Mark Davis's 2nd choice behind John Freakin Gruden. How much do you think that would carry on the NCAA circuit, just being known as a guy who interviewed for the Raiders job?

That would entirely depend on experience. If you were an OC who led a high powered offense for the last few seasons, that's one thing. If you were the Browns strength and conditioning coach for the last 2 years of incredible futility and it was perfectly clear that you flew to LA for 8 hours of pointless lip service because you happen to be a black man, that's a different story.

and if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. The Raiders aren't flying out the night manager at Waffle House, they're going to interview the most qualified guy they can. Even if they interview the someone who was completely under-qualified, how is a trip to Vegas and an interview for job that pays $10M/yr bad for them?

Does The Rooney Rule cut both ways? Can you hire a minority head coach without interviewing a white prospect?

Sometimes it does work. Tomlin was a long shot to get the HC gig in Pittsburgh but he blew them away during the interview. That's anecdotal of course and the rule itself doesn't make as much sense in 2018.
