The theme of duality, doubles, and mirroring are present throughout the entire film. Who really knows what's real or imagined? All Kubrick films convey complex ideas. He is the GOAT.

Maybe the twins were what Hitchcock used to call red herrings. Gotta throw in some false leads for the audience who is always looking ahead to solve the puzzle. The good mysteries always have a few, plus it gets the loonie ridiculati-types some conspiracy food for thought. I thought rm 237 gave pretty good insight into the conspiracy state of mind. We all wanna connect the dots I suppose. Dunno.
