I had to lookup what it is exactly and this is what I got:
Job Corps' mission is to help young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through vocational and academic training aimed at gainful employment and career pathways.

Isn't that what high school is for? So the government fails the first time around so of course the solution is to give a different government program more money to try again?

They took all shop and trades out of school in the 70s/80s. Remember "you have to go to college to get a good job"? All resources went to college prep and the students who could keep up.

I absolutely believe in programs like Job Corps and CCC. I think they should be gutted and start over- government bloated and corruption is baked into its infrastructure. Its basically become the same scam as revolving door rehabs.
I checked it out when I was 22. I wanted to be a sawyer. Went through all the steps which seemed designed to discourage you. When I went to my first group it was 100% gangbangers that had no intention or interest in the program they were just avoiding jail.
It was chaos and dangerous and I noped the fuck out.

The argument that halting/pausing these programs is racist is preposterous.
The argument should be "this fine program was co opted by bureaucrats who preyed on both the taxpayers and those with a very tenuous start in life. They took advantage of you with the hope and belief that you would never finish the project and therefore keep the money flowing in."

These are noble programs that are supposed to benefit the entire nation, let's bring that ideal to the forefront and make these programs great again.

people act like there is endless money to fund everything under the sun. i wish Canada had the sense to cut some of our massively bloated government funded bullshit . maybe taxes wouldnt need to go up every single year to pay for things if they managed the money they already have better

Pretty accurate. It has been turned into a place for troubled kids, juvie, jail or job corps are the options they are given. Like literally judges are giving the kids these options.

Bangor has a job corp, they have a culinary arts program. I ran 2 different restaurants in Bangor for over a decade. I had zero people apply that graduated from the job corp. It's basically housing to keep kids out of the jails and virtue signal that they are learning a trade.

Also, we have adult/continuing education through local high school vocational tech schools already in place. It's where I went to get my welding and machinist 1/2 certificates. It cost me like 150 dollars for each. Just another layer of bureaucracy.

We still have them here, even had them in NY where I grew up
We had a separate trade school program called ROP Regional Occupation Program.
I went there half the day junior year for photography since I had taken everything at my HS. After a week the guy made me TA and gave me keys. Didn't learn shit but had darkroom access whenever I wanted it.

We had autoshop and woodshop still at my HS.
My day was go to the ROP facility til lunch. drive to my HS, hang out for both lunches, go to auto shop, leave campus and drive to my job at a skate shop.

In theory it's a good idea. Young men without direction are incredibly dangerous so giving them chances like this on paper is good. But I've heard they run these camps like minimum security prisons.

The money would be better spent ensuring young men can become good fathers and thus raise good men. This probably means not spending the money at all and instead keeping it peoples paychecks.

Learning how to get up & go to work everyday, managing a paycheck, learning how bank accounts & applications work are are skills alot of young men have literally never before.
If these programs were run better & not used as a holding pen for multiple time offenders trying to stay out of jail for a while longer they could actually contribute to society in both current returns (the infrastructure they build/maintain) and future returns in young people learning how to be citizens.

should go back to Jail or the military son, your choice
Yeah honestly the military should be all over this. That should be the first thing every single able and healthy young man does the day he turns 18, imo.

Agreed, it was common in the 60's and 70's. For the most part it is not allowed anymore. Florida tried changing that a couple years ago.

Even better. Hell yeah. Any non-violent offender goes into service, straight away, that night, boot camp in the morning.

I was talked into volunteering my time with the job corps in the DFW area back in 2017. My CEO wanted me to work with the area director and help with their mentorship program(s). I tried, but everyone involved on their end was either shitty people or dumb as a box of rocks. Hopeless cause then and there, cant speak to other areas. I see why they have such little success if it's the same everywhere else. Some of the young men seemed like they wanted to do well but there was no direction and just chaos. I told my CEO my take on it and he promptly let me quit wasting my time. Too bad, I think a program like this is good in theory. A lot of young men need good men to help them with direction and teach them how to be good men.

I think some form of mandatory service age 18-20, college or whatever later.. no exceptions. You can choose military or some form of job corps/conservation corps.

Service earns citizenship
