For the last year, Tony Ferguson has been campaigning aggressively for a shot at the UFC lightweight title. He was supposed to get one against Khabib Nurmagomedov for an interim belt, but Nurmagomedov withdrew from the bout on fight week and Ferguson was left wanting. Now, come October, Ferguson will finally get the title shot he’s been chasing, though it might not yield the results he’s really after.
At UFC 216, Ferguson takes on Kevin Lee for the interim lightweight championship, and should he win the belt, Ferguson would seem to move to the head of the line to face current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, whenever McGregor decides to return to MMA. But appearances can be deceiving, especially where Conor McGregor is concerned. Early rumors, and the wishes of McGregor’s coaching staff, suggest that McGregor will complete his trilogy with Nate Diaz when he does next defend his lightweight strap, leaving Ferguson out in the cold once again.
Speaking recently with Submission Radio, Ferguson spoke about the potential of getting passed over for true title shot even if he wins the interim title, saying that the UFC needs to honor his belt and make McGregor face him should he win.
