UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson loves the promotion that employs him. But he’s feeling short-changed in the wake of his ill-fated interim title bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov at this past Saturday’s UFC 209.

“I think they should take care of their fighters a little bit more, the ones that really put in their time and effort and really grind for them, because I’m one of those dudes, man,” he told MMAjunkie on Tuesday. “I’m one of those grinders, and I’ve never bashed my company.”

Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC), 33, said he was incredulous when he received a wire transfer from the promotion for “less than half” the $250,000 show purse he was contracted to receive against Nurmagomedov (24-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC), who was scratched from the fight card after he was hospitalized with health complications from his weight cut.

“It was like a slap to the face,” Ferguson said. “My training expenses were a lot larger than any other fight I’ve ever done because this was supposed to be the biggest fight of my career. So now I’m sitting here, and it’s like, what is my worth to the UFC? Like, do I not fight enough? Do I not bleed enough for them? It’s going through my head right now, because I didn’t lose.

That is fucked up but it doesn't surprise me at all. The UFC couldn't give two fucks about any of the fighters on their roster. They're nothing more than a commodity. A number.

Yeah this is horse shit. He did his part. It's not his fault that Khabib fucked up.

I wonder if it actually specifies in his contract what amount he was to be paid in a situation like this?

And for that matter... If the UFC wants to be petty they should deduct the difference from Khabib the next time he fights and give it to Tony now. Fuckers.

When I saw Ferguson was making 250/250 I knew he wouldn't be getting his show money.

Dana only makes it a point of advertising how the UFC "took care" of a guy and paid him his show money when said show money is under 6 figures.

They should make Khabib pay his show money to Tony......out of his own pocket.......and then let's see if he has weight problems and his team goes "rogue" the next time

Remember all those "locker room bonuses" they used to brag about?
They're like 5-7K......

Ffs. Have they learned nothing?

Khabib should cover it out of respect. Actually no fuck that. The UFC should pay him. He did everything they asked.

This was one thing i hoped would change. If you make weight and your opponent doesn't contractually you get a win. No ppv points maybe but show and win are guaranteed. I think it would balance the weight cutting a little too

Not to defend Dana...
but if it became policy for them to just pay them if their opponent doesn't show. Then how could they ever get them to agree to fight a replacement fighter when they're going to get their money for not having to fight?
Hell, it's probably the reason TonyFerguson turned down a fight offer with Michael Johnson, he probably thought he was going to get $250,000 regardless.

What confuses me is that he didn't seem to know what he was going to get (per an interview the day after)

Can WME go 5 fucking days without horribly embarrassing themselves?

How the fuck do you buy a company for $4 billion with the idea that you're suddenly gonna run it on the cheap? I'm ashamed to admit it, but I was a little fearful that a Chinese company like Dalian Wanda Group might buy it, because I figured they'd likely tone-deaf to the sport itself, and would just be buying it to expand their portfolio. But at least a company like that wouldn't need gigantic loans and would know that once you have a marquee franchise, making it bigger and better than ever generally requires pumping more money into it first.

Somehow, we got the worst of all world with WME. They don't respect the sport, they don't how to run a sport, they're short-sighted as fuck pulling shit like GSP vs. Bisping, and they've taken a hatchet to the budget, which you normally only do if you invest in something that was hemorrhaging money. This is starting to look even worse than the Reebok deal, which I didn't think was even possible.

this should be set in stone in the contract and decided well in advance.no way should this be decided after a fighter pulls out and no way should this be a big surprise when you check your bank statement

I remember when Tony was arguing with the UFC because Khabib was making so much more than him. He succeed in having his contract for this fight renegotiated but when the Khabib fight didn't happen (which I'm sure egg and ari knew was a possibility) there may have been some language in there for his pay to revert to his old contract. If this is the case then legally the UFC would be in the clear and Tony should read his contracts more carefully.

I want to be clear that I'm not advocating for the UFC here and think they should have given him his 250k but there is a chance this is his fault for not reading his contract properly.
