Max did a good job of circling out from the first follow up barrage but was hurt enough and Ilia didn’t let him off the hook. Just let Whittaker got up from the first TD but got taken down right away again. Great finishing instincts by both Ilia and Khamzat.

Max also did not allow himself to get corralled against the cage until he was rocked. He circled out nicely each time.

Even Luke Thomas saying this is the first time Max was dropped. Did everyone miss he got dropped in the Gaethje fight? He also got dropped against Dustin in fight 2 but the fence saved him, he was on his way to his seat. But never rocked like this ever. Dustin might have hurt him but Max’s eyes never went off. Same with Aldo in fight 1. That first right hand from Ilia was the first real time he’s been really rocked and then the finishing left hook he didn’t see coming.

Only 1 judge gave R1 for Max. I thought that was a pretty clear round for him. R2 I wasn’t sure. All 3 judges gave Topuria r2.IMG_1665.png

Also good point made by BJM, the spinning kick by Max at the end of r2 may have hurt Ilia so BJM gave Max R2. Yes it’s moot at the end but Ilia threw his hands up so say “didn’t hurt” which usu meant it hurt AND he backed up - the only point at the fight he didn’t move fwd.

R2 was close but R1 was clearly Max. The only reason perhaps 2/3 judges gave it to Ilia was it prob looked to them that Max was dropped at the end of R1 and they don’t have the replay benefit. Replay looked like he slipped.

As for Ilia’s power, the Weasle also pointed out the right hand Max got caught with was due to a Max error in that he was caught in a square stance looking to move laterally. He was too slow, Ilia was too fast and too accurate and too powerful. In the past, against other guys, Max eats the shot like he ate the rest of Ilia’s.

Max finally met the guy who could make him pay.

It took that much and long for Max to get KO’d and it took Ilia to do it. Arguably the best boxer we’ve seen in MMA with some of the biggest power and hand skill.

I hope Max doesn’t turn into a guy that gets flatlined multiple times before he gets out of the sport.
