lets say you left it in a rental car before going on a plane back to another state. Now it's a question of shutting down the phone to make sure no one else can use it.

How do you do that?

Yep it's password protected but pretty sure it was unlocked when it was in the car, does it automatically lock after a certain amount of time of no use?

Pretty sure iCloud has some features to wipe the phone and other stuff.
iCloud: Erase your device

This won't help you and I'm not that familiar with iPhone....
Cerberus App is better than all the other wipe and remote control apps from Google or Apple

Cerberus anti theft - official website

You can take pics, use the mic, record, get the call log and messages, track the phone, etc.

Someone takes your phone and you can start spying and tracking them in ways I haven't found any other app to do.

Best thing would be to buy a galaxy note 7. That way of you lose it or it gets stolen it will likely blow itself up anyway.
