i didn't like that gonzaga fight.BirdWatcher;n3827 said:I do not. Crocop was my absolute favorite for years and I will always be a fan but he look better at GLORY than he did in the UFC. I'd rather just watch him strike or hang them up unfortunately. I hate that Gonzaga gif......

Of course nobody wants to see him get KO'd, but it's worth the chance for him to get a highlight reel LHK KO for nostalgia. No doubt they'll match him with someone to increase the chances of that happening. Then again, I think that's what they were looking for with the Gonzaga fight.lookoutawhale;n3849 said:I have to agree, Cro Cop needs to stick to kickboxing. He left on a low note in the UFC and i dont really want to see him get knocked out again.

if he did just matches like rampage and other aging superstars, that wouldn't be so bad. i just hope that the news is wrong, and it's just a rumor.BirdWatcher;n3920 said:If he does come to the UFC would you rather see him fight some guys that are at a similar place in their career like Rampage,Nog and mayber Alistar or would you rather see him fight somebody like Duffy or another younger guy with a lot less experience? I hate seeing legends become stepping stones but that's the risk probably if you want to see another good outing from the old school. The Nelson KO over Nog was a beauty but it was shitty to see Nog become a former shell of himself over the years, when he KOd Schaub I jumped out of my seat n![]()

That's Dos Caras, Jr. I guess lucha masks were allowed in Pride. That guy also wrestled in WWE as Alberto Del Rio. He left WWE not too long ago after slapping some guy backstage and is rumored to join Bellator in the near future.Judobill;n3954 said:In the gif posted, who is the dude who is wearing the headgear? What's up with that?
Lol all very true. He also was 3-2 in MMA fighting in DEEP before he faced Mirko.Ish Kabibble;n3960 said:That's Dos Caras, Jr. I guess lucha masks were allowed in Pride. ------------------------
I do think this is a good idea.. but only if the UFC does it right. Mirko has looked good lately and if he's matched correctly with the idea of having a GOOD fight happen, instead of just letting someone come in and squash him/try to build their name. With their shitty ratings and interest as of late, along with the signing of guys like Rampage and CM Punk... plus making the Anderson vs Diaz fight, the Rampage vs Maldonaldo fight, etc.. this shows the UFC is starting to realize they need to do anything, like oh you know, make EXCITING fights, in order to get things going again. The UFC understands now that no one is going to spend money to watch fighters nobody knows, all that end up being the the same style of "wrestlebox" fights, with 29-28 boring decisions where everyone fights the same. Featuring guys nobody has heard or before or since their fights.
They are embracing the "entertainment" aspect again - something that made PRIDE so special. In PRIDE, there were elite, compelling matchups between top guys - but often in between those fights, PRIDE would put their top stars in fights purely for fun or almost a showcase, in order to keep them active and display their abilities, only adding to their highlight reels and making them seem more dangerous/larger than life. This built long winnings streaks (for those who could contend with and beat the top comp they also faced several times a year) and truly only helped build these guys.... wayyyy more than a fighter coming up and going 3-2, 3-2 losing a boring wrestle fuck decision, having a sloppy, powerless kickboxing match.. .etc
If the UFC is going to have legends in there, they need to make either classic legend vs legend fights we all want to see, or matchups exactly like Rampage vs Maldonaldo - guaranteed fireworks and a chance to showcase the guy who is a legend and a draw to get people to WANT to see them fight again.
When the UFC has done this right, it's been great and produced awesome results. Sadly, in the last few years it's been few and far between. Despite being in the twilight of their careers, legend vs legend or fun style matchups with said fighters (legendary striker vs wild brawler, legendary grappler vs legendary grappler, etc), such as
Wand vs Liddell
Wand vs Stann (there was not a single person who thought this fight wasn't going to be epic, great style match and an example of a legend being matched correctly in order to have a FUN fight)
Nogueira vs Couture
Shogun vs Hendo (we all know nothing needs to be said about this one)
Mirko vs Barry
BJ vs Hughes III (even though this ended quickly, Hughes had won 4 straight and BJ was looking to rebound from his Edgar losses. Perfect matchmaking on both ends and look what it delivered)
Now, think about the stupid matchups the UFC has put together with these same breed fighters..
Rampage vs Bader in Japan (seriously, WHY. Rampage vs Maldonaldo should have happened here.. you know.. so people actually saw a good fight)
Brendan Schaub vs CroCop (WHY)
Rampage vs Matt Hammil
Shogun vs OSP (who? why?!)
Liddell vs Rashad/Jardine (there were at least 5-6 other great matchups the UFC could've put Chuck in at this time)
Hendo vs Rashad
Nogueira vs Nelson (all of us AND the UFC knew exactly how this one was going to end... doing further damage to the reputation of one of the greatest ever)
Hughes vs Alves
BJ vs Rory (again, legend vs young up and coming destroyer after said legend has taken a 14 month break and not trained for 12 of those months)
BJ/Frankie 3 (I don't care how bad BJ wanted it, they should've paid him the cash to fight someone he actually had a chance against after coming off those serious beatings, not the #1 contender in the world)
Rampage vs Jones (even though Rampage won 3 straight, he clearly lost to Lyoto and barely beat Hammil in a god awful fight.. so the UFC uses him to build up Jones' names and reputation in a match NOBODY gave a shit about. A streak of retarded fights for Rampage, for sure)
Even Nogueira vs Schaub was a FUCKED UP fight to make. Nogueira was coming off double hip surgery only 8 months later and was told to wait for SIX MORE MONTHS but took the fight anyway to fight in his home city. He was coming off some horrible losses and Schaub was on a winning streak, KOing guys like CroCop, beating Gonzaga, etc. They clearly made this fight solely to build Schaub off the name and reputation of a guy who had so much heart, and did so much for the sport, that it was sickening. I'm so fucking happy this backfired and Nogueira put Schaub down.
Boring fights
Pitting them against up and coming guys almost nobody cares about, young journeyman (like OSP vs Shogun, Bader vs Rampage) who will never go anywhere, or rising contenders guaranteed to destroy them... Those kind of fights only hurt the UFC's chance and ability to create FUN matchups with well established stars that will almost always deliver with excitement.. which, you know actually creates interest in the sport and more importantly to them, REVENUE.
I really hope the UFC continues to make fights like that. Mirko can be put against more than a few guys (if Nogueira is insisting on fighting one last time, this would be a GREAT matchup - hell, I'd even watch Mirko/Barnett 4, Mirko vs Overeem 2, etc). They can even sign some guys to create awesome matchups with him.
Again, I can't stress enough that it's clear the UFC is desperate for eyeballs, and the Anderson vs Diaz & Rampage vs Maldonaldo fights being made, make me really think they're going to start utilizing any of these older stars with a name in a much better way. It only makes sense to, and it's fucking stupid to kill them off and part of what drove away people from caring.
If the UFC gives me fun, COMPETITIVE fights with these legends like Shogun, Anderson, Mirko, Nogueira, Rampage, etc etc... I am actually going to want to watch, I am going to be more inclined to pay for the card, and things would be better for all parties involved - fighters AND organization.
Anyway yeah, that's how I feel, and I'm really hoping the UFC continues to go in this direction.. I even hope Lesnar is put into GOOD matchups on his return and not against guys like JDS/Cain who are probably gonna run through him.. Mir rematch, Overeem rematch, Barnett fight, etc.. So many great ones you can do with him instead of just feeding him to the wolves.
I never understood why the UFC ALWAYS had to take guys clearly past their prime, likely never to contend for a title again, and be so focused on their "ranking" and forcing them to fight younger or more elite guys, solely to force some boring Darwinian evolution of our sport, into the half a bore fest it is today.
As soon as those guys show they aren't able to keep up anymore, stop putting them into those pointless fights and give us more Shogun vs Hendo 1 type fights. They can make it happen. Let's hope this is a step in the right direction.
What matchups would you like to see Mirko in if he's actually matched well? What other legends or exciting fighters do you want to see him face off against?
This is the crux right here. In all aspects, I' don't need the world's highest display of fighter. What I need is a competitive fight that gives excitement, even if that excitement comes from context (history, the match that never happened, etc.) I don't need Gracie vs Hughes for god's sake.Galanis;n4093 said:If the UFC gives me fun, COMPETITIVE fights with these legends like Shogun, Anderson, Mirko, Nogueira, Rampage, etc etc... Galanis and Splity are on point here, couldn't agree more. I don't want no official "Legends" division but sell me fights with a great backstory/history with teo guys who match up well and I'm in.Splinty;n4914 said:This is the crux right here.
