But either way. No way you could have been charged with a hate crime. You're being way to dramatic. Hate is an aggravating factor in Canada, not a charge.

You may be correct about me being overly dramatic but I have had situations while I was in college where something I have said was misconstrued by someone else and I was not given any chance to defend myself because I had made someone else feel upset even though that was not my intent.
Being a large, bald, angry looking intimidating white man I have to watch everything that I say.
But... your still not being charged with a hate crime... and you weren't called racist for the interaction. Just move on.

I was walking into a gas station last night and some 14-15 year old kid was trying to get my attention to ask for money. He said "excuse me, sir" like 3 times and I didn't acknowledge him. Then as I'm walking inside he mutters "racist". I just busted out laughing.
I certainly don't think this is a societal problem though. It was only because he was young and stupid that he would even say something like that.

One of the greatest achievements of the 20th century is that being called a racist is actually a dirty word.
Because of that, I think the project of the 21st should be to come up with some different words. "Privilege" hasn't worked out so well (understandably) and bias and discrimination just haven't caught on. Prejudice doesn't quite fit and things like "appropriation" and "gentrification" are similarly loaded and possibly problematic.
So, some questions for people who get hurt when others criticize actions that benefit white people, sometimes through no fault of the direct beneficiaries themselves:
1) What do you think is a good term to categorize a local government rezoning neighborhoods, investing federal monies in clean up, aggressively policing, and removing rent subsidies while they never did so for the decades that a lower income darker complexioned population lived there?
2) What do you think is a term for when people suddenly leave a neighborhood and are given preferable loan conditions to do so after a low cost neighborhood starts to attract darker complexioned people? Bonus: what if those darker complexioned people are denied those lending conditions to also move?
3) What should we call it if members of a cultural group create and popularize a particular thing and never enjoy commercial success, but then a member of another cultural group is aggressively pushed by media and becomes wealthy because they do the thing?
4) What is a tolerable term for when people act as if these differences of treatment don't exist, or worse, when it's thought that there is something fundamental or natural about them?

I'm only 6' and 170lbs but I feel you on the rest of that.
ESPECIALLY since I'm from a small, rural, town in Virginia.
The strangest part is that in my hometown I've been called a racist and a "n***** lover" by people that are just quick to throw a name out there because of their own ignorance.
Anyway... People suck. Racism exists. There are also some really dope people in this world that make it worth being in.
I think I'm going to go fishing now.

College is a space where people test out ideas, boundaries, and ideologies regardless of age or time. Let it go.
I’m going back in 4 months so letting it go isn’t something I can do.
Props to you in that case for pushing your education and your comfort zone. Keep pushing. Being uncomfortable is a sign you're getting a good education.

Learning about the way young adults think and act can help me give my kids better advice when dealing with problems they may have in school as they get older.
I don’t understand the safe space attitude that schools push these days but I’m happy to see that there is no bullying or distinct discrimination visible. If it takes this strange path to make people get along better I’m ok with it even if I don’t necessarily agree actions being taken to get there.

Side note - You should be careful pizony as you’re like me and I can tell you that it’s best to roll up that window without saying anything while you’re with your family....on your own is one thing, but not with a wife and child......all you need is them taking offence and kicking off, flattening your tyres for instance and then it’s you and your family against a bunch of nothing to lose losers.......sometimes it’s best to let the losers hook on to someone else....
