UFC on FOX does record-low ratings despite promise of great fights

Last night's UFC show on FOX on paper promised great action, and largely delivered.

But the promise of great fights didn't resonate with the audience.

The show, headlined by Dustin Poirier's second-round stoppage of Eddie Alvarez, did 1,461,000 viewers on the fast nationals, the lowest in the seven year-history of UFC on the network. While FOX did win the night in the key demos, overall 18-49 (0.6 rating) and 18-34 (0.4), as well as dominated in men's demos, the other three major networks had rerun programming on and still beat FOX for overall viewers.

The fast nationals measure FOX from 8-10 p.m., Eastern, 7-9 p.m. Central, and 6-8 p.m. Mountain time, but also measures 8-10 p.m. Pacific time because networks stagger prime time for more West Coast viewing.

However, for a live sports event, the Pacific time zone would be measured based on what programming the local stations aired from 8-10 p.m.

In addition, the main event ended at about 10:10 p.m., meaning most of the match was not measured. Still, no UFC on FOX has ever done less than the 1,593,000 fast nationals number for the Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza vs. Derek Brunson show in January, and this show was considered far stronger, although July is a much tougher month to draw.

There were three big matches on the main show, with Jose Aldo's first-round win over Jeremy Stephens and Joanna Jedrzejczyk's decision win over Tecia Torres. The number has to be a huge disappointment for a card that featured Alvarez, with a long history of great fights and being a former champion in both UFC and Bellator, Aldo, one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, and Jedrzejczyk, who was considered a superstar as the longtime strawweight champion.

Only caught the main and co-main but I’m damn sure glad I did. If the rest of the card was anything close to those two fights, then people missed out.

I saw Joanna as well
If I have time I might check out the prelims
I heard Bret Hart was there & the place went nuts

I think UFC keeping the production in 2019 will hurt them.
they are in bad need of a presentation facelift.
It is 2018 & just saying "MMA Fights" is not enough
They need to snazzy the presentation up to catch new viewers interest.
It rarely seems "big" to an outside.

that is a big issue going forward.

they have the seem production for 15 years

MMA is still stabilizing after its boom years. It will likely continue to have lower numbers and no business innovation will change that. To me, a slowdown isn't the worst thing, but the fighters will of course unfortunately bear the brunt.

I actually got busy and decided not to watch main event...was on antennae so they didn't notice though

Might be a good thing, cause I typed a ton of posts after their last fight. Fingers got tired.

It'll take more than one decent FOX card to get back all the fans, and momentum, they've lost after a year or more of mediocre pay per views. Not to mention fact that most of their bigger name (bigger drawing) athletes have been MIA.

I don't see them getting back to their peak popularity anytime soon

Even the Conor/RR years, UFC & MMA seemed less popular as an entity than the Brock/GSP/Silva years
they just did some bigger numbers that were offset by lower numbers.

MMA is mainstream but never as big as the major sports.
It will take an "event" to do big numbers & like boxing has proven for decades ... it will have peaks & valleys

You're dead right here. UFC 100 only did fewer buys when UFC changed how they do math to figure things out, and even then it was (suspiciously) edged out of the first position.

Regarding last night specifically, I don't doubt that the start time hurt the event. Personally, I like when they're on earlier, but I'm accustomed to fight cards starting at 10.

This post is from the Rizin 11 thread but applies to this thread.

If the ufc had production values half that high it wouldn’t be losing viewers. Make your fans care about the fighters not whatever Danus fucking White has to say.

That whole scene with Gucci and his master (with English subs) is in the Rizin Confession series (I have a thread on here but stopped updating it since no one seemed to watch them), they are up to 18 now.

I said this about a month ago
UFC needs to look at engaging social media better

One thing WWE has done excellent with is Social Media
There is not a tangible financial effect immediately, but social media interaction is much better than a commercial for fighters barely anybody heard of (on TV)
Fighters need to be better at it as well & I don't mean bitching & acting like a tween

They can't get the Fuck off FOX quick enough. Bring on ESPN. Bring on the 105lb division. (Part of the ESPN rumor was a women's atomweight division added at the same time)

It is official: Saturday night’s 29th installment of UFC on FOX, headlined by Dustin Poirier’s second-round win over Eddie Alvarez, was the lowest-rated event in the seven-year history of the series, averaging a 1.04 rating and 1,678,000 viewers.

With three ex champs, there is no way to spin that. It is obvious Fox put very little effort in, but still very underwhelming

Goodness gracious

I have to say that they did lose a viewer in me as I was moving and didn’t have access to record......please add 1 to the numbers to see what impact I had

We hardcores think the world should know who Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez are. The world doesn't know who Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez are. I don't think it helped that it's summertime and this was a free card. To the avg Josephine, free means not worth watching in MMA. Especially for two unknowns main eventing along with no longer champions Joanna and Jose. I was out and about on Saturday. Nobody gave a f*ck about this card, except hardcores. Even they were only watching with one eye. I'm not sure this is that much different than any prior state in MMA though. Conor back soon and styles are bending. Stars get views. The sport itself seems plateaued. For now.
