I thought y'all would watch it even more in a pandemic.

What gives?

I read it was 96.4 million viewers, but that's still down from the previous year (102 million).

The game wasn't very competitive. That's really all it comes down to. Last year's Super Bowl had the Chiefs coming back from 10 points down with 8 minutes left in the game.

Also goes to show why you never let a Canadian do the halftime show.

There is a historic chart on that site as well showing it was almost 120m a couple years ago and has been trending down ever since. There must be more reasons to it.

I think some people didn't like sports and politics being mixed. I assume that turned some people off.

I expect the Dolphins to reach the Super Bowl (and win it) next year, so look for the ratings to rebound to around 150 million.

Ratings will continue to plummet with bum teams like KC and Tampa Bay playing.

The truth is, though there are a lot of regional teams, the only true "American" teams are the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. Sure these other teams are popular locally, but only the Fins and Cowboys have national fanbases.

How come these two do and not the others?

Emmitt Smith and Dan Marino

For Dallas is really about a history of really strong players and a lot of showmanship by the owners.

For Florida it's infamous kicker Ray finkle

I'd argue it was Ace Ventura for the Dolphins.

Conservatives will say people tuned out because they are tired of the kneeling and woke themes throughout the season but...

The game was shitty.
The commercials were shitty
The halftime was shitty.

Romo did piss himself - other than a blonde woman ref, that's about the only notable thing that happened.

The Cowboys were huge in the 90s. Everyone that didn't really watch football became a Cowboys fan. When U.S. counties are analyzed using data on ticket purchases, the Cowboys are the favorite team in the most counties and have the most fans:

The Dolphins are America's team in my mind only.

People are starting to see how boring it is?

4 hours 30 mins for about 26 mins of action is stretching it to say the least. I think the majority of folk 'watching' it are there for the munch and booze.

Don't even act like you believed any of this.
I like how hes pretending anyone cares about the Dolphins. They aren't even the best football franchise in Florida. Shit, their franchises best player didn't even win a super bowl, did he?

Famously, no.
Marino has 0 Super Bowl titles.

Same with Tua.

That was what I thought but Dolphins fans cling so hard to both their undefeated season and Marino that I often find myself conflating the 2 together.

This is key and it's shown to be true in every American sport.

If you want good ratings then you need the big franchises to be involved. Football needs the Cowboys, Steelers (kind of), The Football Team, the Raiders, or a team from a major market like the Giants, or Bears.
Baseball is "better" when the Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, or a few others are making a lot of noise.

America will tune in to cheer against a giant franchise faster than they will to watch a couple of solid regional clubs. Basically the Mayweather effect.
