This is key and it's shown to be true in every American sport.

If you want good ratings then you need the big franchises to be involved. Football needs the Cowboys, Steelers (kind of), The Football Team, the Raiders, or a team from a major market like the Giants, or Bears.
Baseball is "better" when the Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, or a few others are making a lot of noise.

America will tune in to cheer against a giant franchise faster than they will to watch a couple of solid regional clubs. Basically the Mayweather effect.
Who's "The Football Team"? You talking about Washington?

Yep. The Redskins have a really big following as well. In spite of being hot garbage.
You sure that opinion isn't colored by your geography? Bills have a strong following around here but I wouldn't dare compare their following to the Cowboys, Steelers or Packers.

That was what I thought but Dolphins fans cling so hard to both their undefeated season and Marino that I often find myself conflating the 2 together.
We have an undefeated season?

Well suck it everybody else!

To compare to another sport... They're sort of like the Atlanta Braves... Or even the Chicago Cubs... Shockingly popular for no real reason.

Ratings will continue to plummet with bum teams like KC and Tampa Bay playing.

The truth is, though there are a lot of regional teams, the only true "American" teams are the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. Sure these other teams are popular locally, but only the Fins and Cowboys have national fanbases.
Agree with this. I've been a to few different states in America and I always find a Notre Dame fan somehow.

Living in Canada I tend to gauge larger scale popularity on what merch out stores get because they're sent packages from the various leagues that they're told will sell. Every year there's Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, and Blue Jays. Theyll also send a package of teams who did well the previous season. But most years if you're a Braves or Athletics fan, good fucking luck.

Stop being jealous of the Dolphins.
You don't want to associate with that legacy of losing. Its bad for your image. It's like saying "England is the best at soccer!!!" When really they're terrible and just wasting everyone's time.

Well you see my favorite football team is playing in the third league in threat of going down to the fourth.
Through thick and thin.

Its lame to just pick the best.

But England does suck, agreed.

With one of the most overrated teams ever.

As a new Dolphins fan you can brag on Marino - he's legit one of the best QBs ever.

But the '72 Dolphins are incredibly overrated.
Yes - they went 17-0.
But their regular season that year was one of the easiest of all time - they only faced 2 teams that finished the season with a winning record and exactly 0 made the playoffs.

The '73 Dolphins team was better.

Why isn't everybody competing with everybody? 17 games? Wtf kind of season is that?

With a sensible league system I'm sure the dolphins would have plenty championships.

No.

But I don't hate em either and I am not jealous of their success. They earned it legitimately as opposed to some other teams nationally (Hoffenheim) or internationally (Man City, Paris as the biggest crooks)

Internationally I'm inclined to root for em oftentimes. But it depends.

Look at these sad old bitches. These irrelevant fucks sit by the phone waiting for their sad desperate fans to invent an occasion to trot them out in front of a camera.

“Are the 1972 Dolphins really that obtuse that they still need the self-congratulatory praise of an obsolete accomplishment?

The 1929 Green Bay Packers went 12-0-1 during their season. How come no one talks about their perfection? Because their season was...hmm, could it be because it was shorter than future seasons?

The 1972 Dolphins at one point showed dignity and class, as any Don Shula coached team would. They were revered by the media who relished the opportunity to look to them when speaking of perfection. But now they’ve become an inside joke, the punch line on many a media outlet. “We’re going to talk to the ’72 Dolphins, who hold the fifth longest streak in the NFL for consecutive games won, about what it’s like to be dominant.” “

There is a historic chart on that site as well showing it was almost 120m a couple years ago and has been trending down ever since. There must be more reasons to it.
maybe the NFL misjudged who was buying their product, disenfranchised their young demographic, and then pivoted too late to do anything but piss off their remaining old demographic.
