I ask because my 34 year old brother-in-law is moving in with us. He's a good dude. I like him a lot. He'd do anything for family. He's just hit some hard times...mostly self-inflicted. He was hooked on drugs for years but got clean & sober 2 years ago. He's been living in a halfway house (his choosing) but was asked to move out. So he's going to move in with our family for 4-6 months, until he can buy a house. He has a good job so saving $ quickly shouldnt be a problem.

We have plenty of space. He's going to take the basement, which is basically an apartment (Family room, bedroom, bathroom, bar area). My wife and I have the main level and our 21 yr old daughter has the upstairs to herself.

May biggest concern is our routine being 'disrupted', if that makes sense. I am hoping it goes well, but you just never know when people who don't normally live together, suddenly do.

Change is always hard

Can always remind yourself it is only 6 months, if it is in fact six months

Having a Job that pays well is a huge plus for the situation, assuming he saves the $$ to gain independence.

I have not had somebody move in with me, that is just my best advice on first glance and first thought.

Hell half my family has lived with me, aunts, uncles, cousins...

I'd write up a contract.
If people want to fight, let them fight the contract
Extension, renegotiation, it's all good.
But real men sign them and abide by them respectfully.

I would never let anyone even a family member whose an addict move in. It's a disaster waiting to happen!

I had a girlfriends little brother move in with us to finish his senior year in HS after his parents moved to Idaho. He hated it up there (this was around 98).

Good kid, but holy shit I couldn't keep the fridge full. It was unreal, lol. He graduated and went on to college.
Worth it.

BUT THEN, right when I got rid of him, the parents split up and the goddam mom showed up. With her goddam giant dog.
And proceeded to have a drunken nervous breakdown in my living room for 4 months.

I literally took a transfer and moved out to get away from it. And I was paying ALL the bills, lol.
Told the chick she could come but I was done supporting her psycho mom.
She broke up with me, lol.

So I'm 50/50 in this scenario.

Most recent was the 2 kids, both still here.
1 is a medical necessity.

BUT, the first one came with her BF to stay the night 9 months ago before going househunting.
We was the VP at a Solar Company transferring to a nearby satellite.

Long, looong story short, he was an illegal alien running from return-to-Canada orders.
A Somali who lied about everything.
I made him leave at gunpoint, bought him 2 nights in town 45 minutes away(by then he had a job). Told him if I saw him again I'd be the last thing he saw.

He said and did all the right things, on the surface.' Yes sir', wash dishes, open car doors for her, treat her queen like....But he was a trained somali that conned my kid, so I had to "do dad shit" with a Ruger .45.
That was about 7 months ago.
If my kid wasn't mine she would've been broken, but she's tough.

My cousin (she is like a sister) moved in with us a decade back. My aunt was a right cunt and she wanted to get out of there. It changed her for the better. She lives in new Zealand now with her husband, does event planning or something. Really proud of her.

Yes of course family members can come live with me. they cant bring their pets though unless its as a present to be butchered for dinner. Grandpa and cousins have all lived with me at various times. I dont help drug addicts though.

I have. It can get awkward if they attempt to take advantage of the situation.

Good on you for helping, but I'd suggest charging him rent instead of trusting a former addict to sock money away. Put that money into a separate account that you can cash out and hand over once he's established enough to be on his own.
