The F1 Monaco Grand Prix was an absolute joke, as always. Not a single actual overtake because the circuit is laughably outdated, narrow and twisty.

They really need to sort this out. If there's one place in the world with enough money to throw at a circuit to bring back some excitement, it's the millionaire's playground that is the principality of Monaco.

Right now it's like a Scalextric track with all the cars in the same slot.

They put an 8 minute "highlights" video on YouTube, all the comments were taking the piss out of the sport. It's not a good look.

F1, IndyCar, and NASCAR all seem to be huge trainwrecks in their own way right now - be it enjoyability, bureaucracy, anti-trust, rules violations...

F1 has it's issues for sure, even outside of Monaco there's times when overtaking is ridiculously tough.

When the most recent aerodynamics regulations were introduced, the aim was to allow the cars to follow each other much more closely through the higher speed corners, by allowing way more ground effect and greatly restricting the downforce generated by the front and rear wings.

That worked really well, and we saw a big increase in close racing that first year. Unfortunately there's teams with hundreds of millions in budgets, and some of the best aerodynamicists in the world. In just a few years, F1 is right back where it was.

Good news on the horizon - next year sees a new set of regulations, so things might well get significantly better.

Interesting to hear.

I thought I might try to get into F1 this year - was starting to pay attention to the news & all that before the season started. Then I saw the junk about them voting to not let Andretti start a new F1 team (especially with Cadillac) and all the "good ole' boy" rumors about that's why he wasn't let in & all that...and it reminded me of why I tend to not like F1 in the first place. lol

I-71 N was closed last night and I had to take a detour through Madison, Indiana on my way home from a jobsite.
I was actually wondering where they stored the hydroplane and I ended up driving right by their garage. I didn't have time to stop and get a pic because I was trying to make it home for hot laps, but they had the garage door open and 4 dudes were on the hull working on something. Very cool to see.

Their boat has a new paint scheme this year that reminds me of years gone by...

1748697390035.png

The boat was owned by the town of Madison from its start in 1961 until the end of the 2024 season when it was sold to an investor in Seattle, Washington.

For financial reasons, the boat hasn't had the original Miss Madison colors for a long time - I'd say since the 70s. The town of 11,000 needed sponsors to pay for everything - and those sponsors obviously wanted their name and colors on the boat.

This new paint scheme for 2025 is very cool - and I'm curious as to what the new owner has in mind.

Their season kicks off next weekend in Guntersville, Alabama.

I was supposed to see them in April and it got cancelled. They’ve had the worst luck this year. Should be able to race tonight though.
Yeah - They come back this way in July. Not as good a track but I'll try to see them there.

Wow, what a difference a week makes!

Hugely entertaining F1 Spanish Grand Prix. Three cars battling for most of the race, the two McLarens and Verstappen in the Red Bull. Different strategies kept me guessing for the result.

A late safety car bunched them up, then Verstappen totally lost his cool. He had to go on to the hard tyre (his strategy of taking an extra planned pit stop meant he only had hard tyres at the end), almost lost it at the restart, drifted into LeClerc down the straight, then collided with Russell in turn one. When the team told him over the radio to give the place back to Russell he had a moment of madness, slowed to seemingly let Russell past but instead deliberately rammed him!

He was lucky to only get a 10 second penalty for that, it could have been a black flag.

Even so that left Verstappen in 10th, only a single point scored, and means that both McLaren drivers are pulling clear at the top of the championship. Looks like it might be a two way battle from here on.

I don't think verstappen rammed him on purpose.

They ran an extra lap. Brad got a flat on the last lap and drove straight to his pit instead of to the scale. He was in 3rd on the white flag lap.
He's part owner of that series.
Moving from a 3rd to DQ cost him the series lead. Tyler Courtney is the new points leader by 6. 990-984

I guess props to the officials for enforcing the rule against the owner. After they sorted out the confusion they could have said they never lost sight of the car and it was a good weigh.

Flagman probably feels like an idiot.

LOL

Here's the video, timestamped for the incident.

That's as deliberate as it gets in F1.

You could argue that his team shouldn't have told him to let Russell past, and I'd agree, I think it was the contact with Russell that put him wide in turn one in the first place. Regardless, you can't just ram someone because you're angry at a decision. It was petulant from Verstappen.

FYI
The Earnhardt documentary on Amazon Prime is fantastic. Lots of early footage NASCAR. Crowd shots, etc. Very nostalgic if you followed this sport back then.

The section about Neil Bonnett was fucking heartbreaking.

At the 13 second mark (and 34 second mark in slow motion) you can see the roostertail disappear. It's all over at that point.

For those that don't know, these dudes will do 200+ down the stretches, but they have to "settle" the boat and the skid fin back into the water so they are able to turn. That skid fin holds the turn line and is what throws up the massive roostertails in the turns - and if that fin exits the water, the driver goes from 6 Gs to 0 instantly and the boat goes straight. Like if you were swinging something around your head on a string and the line snaps - off it goes.

Here's a good shot of a skidfin holding the line in a turn:

Here's another example of when it doesn't.
In this crash it actually fell off:

The scenery for the Detroit indy car race was awful worst track on the schedule. Belle isle was a better track in Detroit. This poster is terrible too.

Are the cars supposed to be roller skates?
