If he feels he didnt do anything wrong why did he delete the tweets on his own?
He wasnt making jokes about Mike Jackson or Catholic Priests, he was making jokes about himself. Would your friends laugh if you talked about fucking your kids? You think if you did it 1000s of times they would still drop their kids off to hang out? Thats the difference
He deleted the tweets because he knows how the outrage culture swallows up careers now a days. That's not necessarily an admission of guilt - it's self preservation.
And it depends on what the joke is. I don't have kids but if I made a joke like that, my friends would know I was joking. I like a good dark joke - even one that makes me cringe.
But I'll say this and leave it because I could ramble on all day about this... comedy is shaped largely by comedians/writers who work on the "edge". Think of your favourite comedians and comedy shows over the years - I gaurantee you there's a fuck load of people who are offended by it at some point.
If you're working on the edge for that great comedy, every once and awhile a joke is going to go over the edge. If we want to end funny people's careers over a errant joke that went over the edge, we're going to be eliminating a lot of funny people from creating comedy. And if the consequences are loss of all career and livelihood... funny people are going to play it safe with humour, no one is going to push the envelope and we're going to have an abundance of boring, milquetoast comedy.
