The much anticipated super-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was made official on Saturday night, immediately after Canelo’s bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The bout was announced to take place on September 16, which apparently was a significant date for the UFC as well. Dana White, who was in attendance to watch the boxing match, revealed that they initially planned to have the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather bout to happen at the same day.

“We just lost our date to Canelo and GGG, but that’s a good fight,” White told Fight Hub. “I’ll be at that one too!”

The UFC President, who has his roots from boxing, also spoke about being excited for the GGG vs Canelo fight.

“Canelo looked good tonight. Canelo looked awesome. GGG is fun, man. He is the type of guy that boxing needs, so it will be a fun fight — and so is Canelo,” he said.

When asked for a prediction, the UFC president had a simple answer.

“The fans. The fans win that fight. That’s going to be a real fight. That’s going to be a fun one.”

White recently stated that getting the McGregor vs Mayweather fight isn’t an easy task, but he plans on doing everything he can to make it happen.

LoL at anyone who believes that bullshit.

Whatever Egg was, whatever credit you want to give him for UFC, he's a charlatan now.
He's Don King, without the hair or melanin.

Good.

That means Floyd either faces a live opponent in Boxing or doesn't fight at all (hopefully the latter, biggest conman in the game) and Conor - hopefully - gets to defend the title... And we get to see GGG/Canelo (a long time in the making).

It's worked out perfectly.

"We?" Why should Dana be involved in this in any way shape or form?

As I posted in another thread, it has serious implications for GSP return fight too. What are they going to do, try to book McG/May and GSP in the same month?

Hopefully GSP doesn't come back. He is past his best, and it'd mean to Bisping faces Romero or Mousasi.

Again, we should be thankful that GGG/Canelo is a done deal. It might help sort out the mess that the UFC is in at the moment.

Because the UFC controls Conor's contract and put Dana in the position of arranging fights/brokering deals

Or just make it worse.

Brilliant move by Dana to say that because it makes the world think Floyd vs Conor might actually be real and gets the UFC some free press to coattail the Canelo vs GGG fight.

No, but it doesn't happen without UFC authorisation and involvement
They have a way of stinking up the show.
I hope the Irishman can find a loophole and make the fight happen without them getting even a cent of his earnings.

From what I understand their contracts are pretty airtight and Conor most likely looked at this as an option early on.......with no success or he would have run with this himself and the fight would have been booked by now.
The UFC previously (apparently) wanted 80% of Conor's purse and things went quiet around the time this was revealed

Well he'd be a fool to only fight for (edited) 20% of his purse and I suppose they're not fools for wanting to protect their image/brand from being boxed up in the ring. :/
Cheers for the info.

In the same way that the link between autism and vaccines has serious implications for unicorns.

Why isn't he setting up a fight for Conor to defend his MMA belt?

I'd rather watch the fight in Japan between the 12 year old and the housewife. It has more relevance than this tired circus act.
