If you’re unfamiliar with the Fight Facts series, I wrote for Vice Sports with a similar series titled “Cage Captions” for a while. This new project is currently a collaboration with the team at Combat Docket! It's a per-card distillation and breakdown of all the Interesting Info and Octagon Oddities on every card, with a sprinkling of puns, winks, and portmanteaus to keep it fresh. The name may have changed, and some of the stylistic features from Cage Captions have been altered, but it’s the same great information presented in a slightly different format. Fightland forever!

Ending the year in style in Vegas, the UFC gave Cris Cyborg the toughest fight she could handle against former 135 pound champ Holly Holm, and the night included several dominant performances, the return of a fan favorite, and a lot more.

Fight Facts: UFC 219
1/2/2018

Total number of UFC Fights: 4479
Total number of UFC Events: 424

Who’d A Thunk It?
In 20 title fights in 2017, three title fights took place at the women’s featherweight division, the most of any division this year, in a division actively populated by fewer fighters than there were title fights in it this year.

In contrast, the division with upwards of 90 fighters currently on the roster, among the most of any division – lightweight – only featured one title fight all year.

Oh No KO
For the first time since UFC 208 in February 2017, also headlined by Holly Holm fighting for the women’s featherweight title, UFC 219 featured no knockouts. It was the just the NINTH event in UFC history to feature no KO/TKOs, and 2017 became just the second year in UFC history to feature more than one event devoid of knockouts (2007).
  • 2017 – UFC 208 02/17 and UFC 219 12/17
  • 2014 – TUF 20 Finale 12/14
  • 2010 – UFC 118 8/10
  • 2007 – UFN 9 4/07 and UFC 76 (titled Knockout) 9/07
  • 2006 – UFN 4 4/06
  • 1997 – UFC 15.5 12/97
  • 1995 – UFC 7.5 12/95

To the Victor…
In Cris Cyborg’s ELEVENTH career five-round fight, her bout with Holly Holm was the FIRST bout in her career to go the full twenty five minute duration. Cyborg is still undefeated at 10-0 (1 NC) in five-round fights.

Belongs the Spoils
Earning her first post-fight bonus in the UFC with her “Fight of the Night” battle against Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg earned the first post-fight bonus in women’s featherweight history.

With her bonus as the main event, a total of 30 out of 39 main events (77%) were awarded bonuses in 2017.

Usually Reserved For Finishers
Khabib Nurmagomedov, in his ninth UFC bout, finally won a post-fight bonus, earning a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his one-sided decision victory over Edson Barboza.

It is just the FIFTH time in UFC history that a fighter has been awarded a “Performance of the Night” bonus after winning a decision, with all of those decisions coming unanimously. Previously, C.B. Dollaway, Rafael dos Anjos, Tony Ferguson, and Josh Barnett all earned "Performance of the Night" bonuses after winning decisions.

Perfect Is As Perfect Does
Maintaining his undefeated record at 25-0 with a dominant performance over Edson Barboza, Khabib Nurmagomedov has NEVER lost a round in nine trips to the Octagon.

While many believe that Gleison Tibau won a round or even the decision when he fought Nurmagomedov, the scorecards turned up three counts of 30-27 in favor of Nurmagomedov.

Takin’ It Easy
Cynthia Calvillo became just the seventh fighter in 2017 to compete four times inside the Octagon, and lost a decision to Carla Esparza. No UFC fighter won more than three times in 2017.

Year of the Snake
With his second round anaconda choke submission of Mark De La Rosa, Tim Elliott secured the SECOND anaconda choke in UFC bantamweight history. The first anaconda choke at bantamweight was performed just two weeks ago, by Alex Perez against Carls John de Tomas at UFC Fight Night 123.

It is the THIRD anaconda choke pulled off this year, making 2017 the second year in UFC history to feature three anaconda chokes (2010).

Mawwaige!
By making his UFC debut, albeit unsuccessful, Mark De La Rosa became part of the FIRST married couple in UFC history to both compete in the organization. His wife, Montana De La Rosa, née Stewart, competed on the TUF 26 Finale in early December, winning her debut against Christine Marks by armbar.

While Travis Browne and Ronda Rousey are married, their marriage was effectuated after Ronda Rousey’s presumably final bout inside the Octagon.

Never Say Never Again
Coming into this event, Marc Diakiese had never been stopped (13 fights), Cynthia Calvillo and Mark De La Rosa had never lost (6 and 9 fights respectively), and Cris Cyborg had never fought beyond the fourth round (20 fights).

Nothing Wrong With Me
Carla Esparza walked out to “Bodies” by Drowning Pool for the second time in her career, and has won both times.

For most of Esparza’s career, she had walked out to “Harvester of Sorrow” by Metallica, but after Metallica songs were nixed as walkout songs in 2017 due to legal reasons, she shifted once to “Walk” by Pantera before settling on “Bodies.”

Disturbing Trend
In 19 recorded uses of Disturbed songs throughout UFC history, the winning percentage of the hard rock band stands at just 31.6% after a majority draw between Marvin Vettori and Omari Akhmedov. Vettori walked out to Disturbed’s “Down with the Sickness,” changing it up after three uses of Korn’s “Falling Away from Me.”

To keep up tradition in the new year, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. I'm always looking for ways to improve my information and presentation. If you want to know some other stats from these cards or are wondering about something else related to fight results or walkout music, I'll always take requests.

Be sure to check out my buddies at Combat Docket!

Great job as always.

Not in any way trying to be a jerk or grammar nazi type, but since I assume you are publishing this elsewhere, you may want to edit this:
Good catch, we must have changed 145 pound to featherweight and didn't pull that out.

Khabib saved that card with his return. Otherwise, it was pretty freaking boring if we're being honest. Not one finish ffs.

Thx for the correction. I missed the Elliott fight, and the Hooker one was so uneventful I forgot he got the finish.
I found the finish on UFC's twitter page of all places. The Hooker one was surprising, it went from zero to finished suddenly.

All I remember was the crowd booing, Rogan calling them meatheads, dozing off, and then hearing Hooker choked him out lol.

And then you were awake enough to watch a man slowly bludgeon another man almost to death while he tried to spin kick to save his life.

Khabib.

Ferguson.

Ferguson.

But my picks on here have been ghastly lately, so don't ask me.

If the Ferguson who fought Lee shows up, Khabib wins. If the Ferguson who fought RDA shows up, Ferguson could win. Imo.

If the Ferguson that fought Vannata shows up then Conor sends his chin into orbit and Khabib ends his life.

Turns out I was double dipping performances bonuses on my databases, so it's actually only the fifth time in UFC history where a fighter that won a decision got a POTN bonus.

I don't know. That Lee had a serious staph infection and that will absolutely drain you physically. I honestly cant believe he was able to cut weight and make it to the octagon, then perform admirably until his cardio was zapped. That wasn't the real Kevin Lee that night. I hope we get to see those two run it back.

Yeah, that's my point - Lee was sick and Ferguson looked terrible against him. I don't think he would have gotten that triangle if Lee weren't sick. I know Tony was having a more emotional time than normal, but he can't show up like that and expect to beat a healthy Khabib, no way.

If he shows up like he did against RDA, he has a chance.

I plan on having a year-end breakdown of everything that happened in the UFC last year. I'm going to include title fights as a category. Should be ready to go by the week's end.
