Negotiations with the UFC and GSP's contract happened because of Freddie Roach. When it was done Roach, GSP and Dana have all said that Freddie will be in Georges Corner for his fights. Freddie's first cornering in MMA and no doubt Dana realized this, Roach being in a corner for a UFC fight is a very good thing for the company.

For sure Freddie has a right to say what he did. Just not the smartest thing to say as a marketing strategy.
You expect me to believe Dana sat through a negotiation with Freddie Roach? Like Freddie jumped on the call and said "Dana here's some good fights I could get Georges ready for" and Dana said aw shucks Fred, you got a point!" Roach is not exactly known for his skills at the table, but if that's the story, I'll go with it.

I don't know whether he sat in on the talks, but a lawyer and Freddie were involved in getting the deal done. I don't know whether Freddie helped come up with the negotiation strategy and then left it to the lawyer, or something else, however, both he and GSP agree that Freddie was influential in getting the new deal done.

Every time GSP, Freddie Roach and UFC are mentioned in the same sentence a search engine optimizer gets a bonus is all I'm saying.

Yeah so he can retire with a boatload of money .... makes sense.

Doesn't make sense for the UFC to risk Conor getting destroyed by a fighter who's going to retire and bring the UFC $0 after that

That's my thought too, initially. Then tried to think the way the UFC SPIN Machine would and came up with an theory, it'e a bit out there.

Could not figure out why the UFC made the Bisping vs GSP fight when there were better and bigger fights for GSP's return that could have been made. Except for this....

By putting GSP vs Bisping together it's a very good first fight for the company to make (other than money, any top name or Champion would have worked) to find out if Georges still has it or has lost a step after being off for so long. If GSP loses the UFC can dictate what fights GSP does next. If St Pierre wins, he now has two dif division belts ( just like Conner), now they can have GSP fight at WW for the Championship (where he belongs) and he'd be forced to vacate the MW strap.

IF he wins his next fight or two and Conner comes back, the UFC can make the BIGGEST FIGHT in UFC history. MacGregor vs ST Pierre, both two division Champions, facing each other would be an incredible payday for all.

My guess it would be contested at WW, even though GSP has said he could make LW This way if the UFC's golden boy Conner loses, his reputation would not be tarnished. The UFC would spin it saying "GSP was the much bigger fighter" , "He was even MW Champion", " Conner was FW Champ, now he fought a guy that was FOUR weight classes higher, the kid is scared of no one", " We told him NOT to take the fight at WW, GSP was just too big", " It's like GSP stepping up four weight classes and fighting Stipe at HW" and finally "That is why we have weight classes".

Conner's legacy would be fine. Then the UFC makes their truck loads of cash and can STILL market Conner as the bravest, toughest fighter ever, who may not have won the fight but has the biggest balls in the UFC or as Dana always says "This kid will fight anyone, any day, any place, I Love That".

While GSP retires and rides off into the sunset

PS IF Conner did win.... Then the UFC could push Mac on us even more being the first THREE Division Champ . Who beat the GOAT and retired him. UFC could say Conner must be the GOAT himself, even though he never defended a title.
