Georges St-Pierre is no longer the middleweight champion of the UFC. A little more than a month after beating Michael Bisping to win the belt, St-Pierre has decided to vacate the title.

“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health,” St-Pierre said in a statement provided by the UFC. “Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.”

Last week, St-Pierre was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. That diagnosis led to his decision to vacate the title. He informed the UFC that he would be vacating the title earlier this week, sources said.

As a result, Robert Whittaker has been named the undisputed middleweight champion of the UFC. Whittaker won the interim title in July after beating Yoel Romero via unanimous decision.

Whittaker will now defend the title against former champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 on Feb. 10 in Perth, Western Australia. MMA Fighting first reported that fight on Thursday.

St-Pierre told TSN on Wednesday that he believes he got sick as a result of his move up to middleweight.

“After the fight, I thought first it was the stress that caused it and it would go away, but it did not go away,” St-Pierre said. “So what happened is even after the fight it persisted and I knew something was wrong so I let a few days pass by and after that I went to see a specialist. And I’ve been diagnosed with colitis, ulcer colitis, but now I have the medication and since I started medication it goes very well. So I’m almost 100-percent now.

“I feel much better now than before and also it’s a lot less blood so it’s good. It was a more scary and stressful situation for me than the actual reality. There’s different levels of colitis, I don’t think mine is very severe. Some people are stuck in a situation where it’s more severe and it can affect their well-being much more, but mine is not that bad.”

St-Pierre, 36, won the title against Bisping on Nov. 4 at Madison Square Garden after taking a four-year break from active competition. As a result, he became just the fourth fighter in UFC history to become champion in two different weight classes.

He also now becomes the first fighter to vacate a title in two different weight classes as he dropped the welterweight belt in 2013 prior to his hiatus.

Great news.

Only speculation on my side of things, but I have a feeling he's not being truthful to us when it comes to the reason he is vacating. All seems a bit funny to me.

With him making the move to fight Bisping for the Middleweight strap, it doesn't add much to his achievements for me. It's pretty low on the achievement list when you look at what he has accomplished.

I tell you what though, imagine if he took on a Whitaker, Jacare, Weidman, Romero or Rockhold. That would be one of his greatest achievements. I figured we could have the chance to see this once he beats Bisping, but the unexpected (expected) happened.

Sad for his health, but honorable way to wrap his career if this is it.

Running scared of Bobby Knuckles is all. First it was his shoulder. But he was filmed doing gymnastics the next day. Now weeks later it's his asshole shifting blood... Goodbye Goerges. Great fighter. One of, if not the GOAT. But he's running from an ass whooping. And I don't blame him.

Saw someone point out that he is the lineal MW champ as well as the lineal WW champ. But when it comes to MW, he's the lineal champ for so many belts. Pride, Dream, Strikeforce, WEC, Cage Warriors...... All of those titles are owned by GSP now.

If he beats Conor that would make him the lineal champ for 4 weight divisions if Conor doesn't lose to someone else first.

So the pantomime of the middleweight division in the bisping era comes to a close.

3 people agree with this post? but does that mean he has been poopin red?....yikes

is this true?
Maybe black.

Possibly red.

Really depends.

But yes to bloody poop happening from colitis.

With lots of internal irritation that kind of causes constant pooping it's possible that he just has an internal hemorrhoid that's bleeding.

I'm sorry about his colitis. But GSP said right after the fight something like he'd never been hit that hard and he doesn't want to do that again. I don't think he was just talking about Bisping.

Multiple people have said Bisping hit them the hardest they've ever been hit, but what they probably meant is that Bisping hit them the hardest they've been hit and still stayed awake to feel it.

I am not going to say anything bad about GSP running from Whittaker, because he likely doesn't want to get severely injured at least as much if not more than he is just scared to lose.

The UFC has already made me care less about lineal titles and more about the people actually carrying the divisions anyway, even before Conor.

I wonder how much Georges had to change up his diet to gain the mass for 185?

Diet doesn't really cause colitis but it can make the symptoms much worse.

Whatever.. I just hope that Bobby Knuckles knocks the smirk off of Luke's smug face.

I blame the aliens..Not sure how I feel about Gsp anymore.
Sucha can of worms I would have to write a book to explain. But not clogging the division is the right move and if his health can improve I hope it does.
