If you go back and listen to the MMA Hour episode where Roach talked about inserting himself into GSP's contract negotiation with the UFC (he went around Dana and talked to Ari), Freddy states pretty clearly that there was a list of opponents agreed on prior to signing. This was before Whittaker became interim champion, and it was also contingent, obviously, on GSP winning his comeback fight against Bisping. GSP came back to fight one off 'super fights', and never wanted the pressure of having to defend a UFC belt, again. Everything else, including Dana's claims of being pissed about the recent turn of events at middleweight, is just smoke and mirrors.

I'm sorry about his colitis. But GSP said right after the fight something like he'd never been hit that hard and he doesn't want to do that again. I don't think he was just talking about Bisping.

Multiple people have said Bisping hit them the hardest they've ever been hit, but what they probably meant is that Bisping hit them the hardest they've been hit and still stayed awake to feel it.

I am not going to say anything bad about GSP running from Whittaker, because he likely doesn't want to get severely injured at least as much if not more than he is just scared to lose.

The UFC has already made me care less about lineal titles and more about the people actually carrying the divisions anyway, even before Conor.
