From standing, he chain wrestles from a high c to a single (head inside) and back so, if he doesn't get the TD right away and they try to grab his head, he repositions it out of the standard guillotine position. If he finishes the high c (by running the pipe or otherwise), he keeps his hips high so they can't close the guard, uses his head and shoulder to flatten them, and then walks around to take away the angle.

His entire full guard passing game (both gi and no-gi) is premised on stapling you to the ground with his head and shoulders, and then keeping his hips high while walking around your legs. If you manage to capture him in half guard, then he just flattens you with reverse scarf and passes like a hot knife through butter. It's unreal but, at the same time, extremely technical.

Damn fine assessment, I was going to mention the same points. Maia often establishes the high crotch and transitions into a single (and back if needed). Perfect chain grappling from a phenomenal grappler.

I've watched a number of Maia breakdown vids and I use a similar game, just nowhere near as well hahaha. Yes, switching his head back inside looks pretty important, as well as the top pressure. Thanks for the analysis, it clears up quite a bit :)
