Well, as far as we know they operated within the confines of the law and the edible parts of the animal were eaten. So yes they'd be hunters.
Someone who kills an animal uses every part they can, and keeps the inedible parts as a trophy is not the someone who dismembers a still living animal for a piece of ivory leaving it to die in pain. As I said earlier, it's ignorant to try to lump them into the same category.
