Define "descendant" please. And if so, he was a tudor, so that would explain you teaching. What boggles my mind is he was a librarian. When is the last time you heard of a librarian slapping people in the back of the heads, or kicking dogs? Maybe you got that from the Irish side of your family?
I had a summer job as a librarian once. On the other side of my family I come from reindeer herders and organized crime. I am the perfect blend.

Who's the poster who talks at length about the challenges of legal immigration and how the undocumented are over-valorized. Yossarian @Yossarian or Greenbean @Greenbean or someone?

What do you think should happen to our dear friend Disciplined Galt @Galt
Apples and oranges mang. Wouldn't have a problem with Somalis in Sweden if they made their own way. Not everywhere is like your experience. You are way too smart for that line.

I refer to the US as my experience is from being in the US. Disciplined Galt @Galt immigrant status is not known to me other than what's been said on here. But yes, if you came somewhere legal and things expired, you are not an illegal immigrant but your stay should not be taken for granted. Get your affairs in order and hope this will be sufficiant.

Undocumented, which Galt is not because he came there legally, that is an enitrely different topic. The "undocumented" came to their target country wihtout intent to do so legally.

In the US there's this hunt going on that goes after these people that ARE documented, but somehow neglected their duties to arrange the needed paperwork for their stay. That is a troubling thing to me. If you have been neglecting your papers/status, okay, that is on you. But some people have had a hard road towards citizenship and these things are costly.

What should happen to Galt? He should first and foremost get a blowjob. Drink his last drink. Put on a suit, and get those papers son! You'll feel better.

For many immigration hawks, overstaying is overstaying. It doesn't matter if you make your own way, which most immigrants do anyway. You're taking Thai jobs from natives who have mastered English etc. I don't subscribe to this line of thinking, but do think your experience is educational for people who paint migrants with a broad brush.

Overstaying a visa isn't "letting your documentation lapse." It's technically breaking the law no different than coming to the country in the back of a van. We can't guess at people's intentions. Maybe a person smuggled in thought they'd immediately find a native spouse. Maybe a person on a visa always knew they would overstay it. By law, if you haven't bothered to notify a country of your presence, then you are trespassing.

At least that's one way to look at it.

Another is that the permission systems of states which more or less arbitrarily decide who can come and stay and for how long (not to mention for a high price) just aren't reflective of people's lived reality or the economic and political conditions that drive them to call a place home.

Or alternately, Galt just needs to settle his yaa dong bill.

Bad planning on my part. Fucked up and lived on 10 baht a day. Now I've got credit at the bar.

You used the term undocumented. That was false. This is why I hate this euphemism. If Galt came there legally, he is documented, period. Coming into a counrty without documentation, that shows unlawful intent from the get go, so yes, we may take that guess.

Maybe a person on a visa always knew they would overstay it.
This is where the guessing starts.

By comparing the ones that sneak in a back of a van, and the ones that come in legally, and negelct their papers, you are painting immigrant with that braod brush you so claim to despise :)

They are sending these immigrants home that have lived here and came here legally, but have let things slide over the years, they are doctors, dentists, good working people with families. They are documented. They are not the same as the ones that sneak their way in and work without paying the taxes, etc.

You're valorizing certain labor as having more utility than another. The dude who cooks a great steak in the back of a diner objectively touches more lives than the average doctor or computer programmer. Saying that a person's supposed utility to a society should in any way influence their ability to stay has always been arbitrary and problematic.

If your documentation is lapsed, you are undocumented. If your driver's license is lapsed and you're in your vehicle, are you licensed to drive? Will the police treat you differently than a person who never had a license in the first place? In the eyes of the law, documentation isn't about its origins, but about its current status.

But there is plenty of room to say that the law is not the only arbiter or that it should be changed.
