I always wanted to use this method to build a small cabin, much easier than lifting logs

Rather than the middle board being solid, couldn't you achieve the same result with a vertical 2x6? Spaced at 24" on center? Alternate the layout with the board above so you have roughly 12" on center stability when fastened. Fill the void with insulating foam.

Probably could, I think the cost of the insulating foam to fill all those voids would be a hell of a lot more than full wood though.

First of all, what is holding the roof down? It looks like it's just sitting on top unattached. Secondly, how long has this method been around? I swear I switched timelines at some point...
A long time, couple different methods for the roof, basically a tie down strap from the footing or pour a bond beam.

We poured a bond beam for our barn, basically spiked rebar at different angles on the top row and attached rebar to it.

Poured and stripped the forms

And then went with wood off the beam

Yours looks a lot better than theirs. The one they did made me wonder what the point was, all that work and it looked like a mud hut.

It's the hippy way, they use a clay mixture for the coating, I poured it on a slab, used chicken wire and surface bonding cement

Yeah. I've heard that. But it is true that our money is worth far less now. I'm lucky to be the first generation where making 100k per year is a paycheck to paycheck salary.
