The story was written with a white character in mind. This isn't a Japanese character being recast with a white actor.
Where was the outrage when Bill Murray was the male lead in Lost In Translation? "Culture appropriation! Argggghhh!" cast an older Asian American have his characters backstory be he doesn't speak any Japanese because god forbid white people go to your country in movies.

I don't wanna spoil it...but I enjoyed the Yakuza angle...not many Yakuza movies with any english in them
and Leto looks spooky and creepy as usual...pretty good character

The acting was great, setting was great but it was missing something that I can’t put my finger on. 7/10 would be my thoughts as well. If you liked this though find Infernal Affairs and watch it, it was the movie The Departed was based on.
