Joe Rogan explains why he quit calling UFC on FOX cards after conflict with execs

There are multiple reasons Rogan stopped working FOX-televised fight cards, he said, starting with the financial side of things.

“My contract is with the UFC and I was never working for FOX,” Rogan said on his Fight Companion podcast for UFC Fight Night 130 on Sunday. “That was one of the stipulations of my newer contract (with the UFC), was I said I didn’t want to do the FOX events anymore. This year, I don’t do any of the FOX events. You’ll notice when there’s big fights on FOX, I don’t do any of them – none of them. Zero. Stopped doing it – didn’t want to do it anymore. Too much work, too much travel. (Wearing a) suit is not a big deal because they have the suit there for me, but my issue was FOX actually paid me less money – less money to do the events on FOX. I was like, ‘You guys are high.'”

The travel, workload and the level of compensation certainly bothered Rogan, he said. However, all those factors were outweighed by some differences of opinion with FOX Sports executives and producers.

He claims people on the production side of things tried to take some of his freedom away, and that didn’t sit well with him.

“They got in my ear,” Rogan said. “The very first events for FOX, they were like telling me what to do. They were telling me to take it down a notch. ‘Don’t be so amped up about that guy,’ I was like, ‘What? What are you doing here?’ I go, ‘Listen, I do commentary. This is what I do. I’ve been doing it forever. This is how I do it. If you think you can change me, then we’re not going to work together.’ We had a real problem for the first event. It was a FOX production.

“I didn’t like it. They want a sports guy. Look, MMA is what it is. It’s fighting. It is a very specific kind of sport. I’ve been doing it the way I’ve been doing it forever. If you don’t like the way I do it, that’s fine. Don’t hire me. But don’t try to get me to become some sports guy. I’m not interested in that at all.”

After FOX tried to push him in a certain direction, he said he was very vocal about his thoughts on the situation. He said the people trying to get in his ear quieted down after that, but Rogan said the early tension still resonated with him.

“They stopped doing it after the first event when I voiced my displeasure,” Rogan said. “I let them know really clearly, ‘Look, we’re not doing this. We’re not going to change how I do it to make you happy. If you don’t like the way I do it, it’s not an option for you to direct me and tell me to do it the way you like it, because you think that’s how.’ They were producers or executives. I don’t agree with them, and I’m not doing it that way.”

Rogan said he’s not sure what the future holds in terms of his position as a commentator. He’s been signing one-year contracts over the past few years, which usually have expired in the summertime. He sounds content with calling roughly 12 UFC cards per year, but with the UFC switching broadcast partners for ESPN in January 2019, it’s possible the circumstances could change, he said.

One thing that won’t change, Rogan said, is the way he does his job.

“This is what I do,” Rogan said. “I get amped up. If some (expletive) goes down and guys are trading blows and I’m screaming, it’s because I feel that way. It’s legitimate passion. I’m not faking it. They let it go after a while, but it’s not like they fought for me when I quit, either.”

Fox execs are correct if they are referring to when he says a fighter is winning exchanges they are not.

If they are referring to the “whoa’s” and “he has a risk of BEING KNOCKED OUT!”, then that might be a bit much. Being “amped up about that guy” makes me think its the former.

Good job Fox

Says a lot about him. All that says to me is 'I'm a cunt who can't accept criticism and that's why my comedy and commentary sucks'.

His commentary can be very good at times but at other times he is god awful. And that's not just my opinion - he has faced so much public criticism before that he's had to release public apologies. He has ruined many fights with biased, hysterical commentary.

If the producers were telling him to change everything about his style, sure, tell them to go fuck themselves. But it's literally their job to stop people from hijacking a broadcast with nonsense, and telling him to calm down would just be doing us all a big favor.

I've been saying for years that MMA has grown beyond the 'meathead' demographic that really digs Rogan, and his failure to adapt is going to be the end of his broadcast career. Frankly, if Egg had left when the sale happened, Rogan would be gone already.

Which is a shame, his passion and knowledge are unique in sports broadcasting.

his ronda shilling made him expendable

lost all credibility

Coke cut with Creatine cut with Turinabol also makes him expendable

I won't miss him...passionate yes...but unbiased he is not...I prefer somebody who has fought MMA as an analyst

Weren't they the ones who called him "Mr hype" or "hype machine"?

I kind of respect the fact that he stuck to his guns and didn't let them change him for their own purposes.

Tbh though, he does have a ton of bias. The only way to rewatch a fight to see what really happened is to mute it and not bother with commentary. So the honest truth is that he could have toned it down a bit.

However, in the moment he does make the fights more exciting and he does make the moments on the ground more interesting, because he explains for the lay man who doesn't practice jiu jitsu.

They could get better guys though, no doubt about that. But Joe brings alot of the energy and information(not the striking side of things, he obviously mis-represents whats really going on on the feet) to the broadcasts.

On a side note, not trying to talk shit, but, is it just me or is Jimmy Smith shitting the bed with those fight panel broadcasts?

The guy's hesitating and stuttering alot it seems.

I’ll do the FOX cards.
But I want to scream “Boo Yaka!” everytime a punch lands, and yell “Sleep you dopey Bitch!” everytime someone sinks in a choke.

Lot of hate for Rogan in here. He’s definitely the best commentator by a wide margin. There are a couple other decent guys, but he’s head and shoulders above everyone else. I literally fell asleep on my couch mid day listening to the commentary from Liverpool. And i like Dan Hardy.

Define "sucks" when comparing his life to yours. He's made millions, does ONLY what he wants, when he wants, reports to no one... I'd take that sucky life in a heartbeat. If you life is better than that, please do tell your magical secrets.

Not sure how many other promotions you folks watch but Joe is one of the better ones out there. If you don’t think so, try watching an Invicta card or even a Bellator card now that Jimmy Smith is no longer with them. On that note BJM may be one of the worst the way he grabs fighters by the neck and just hypes whoever the little voice in his ear tells him to hype up. I know there are lots of Bellator (and BJM) fans and I get it but the end result is not as good as Joe on his worst day IMHO.

On the one hand, Joe is a multi-millionaire and I haven't had a steady job since the Blockbuster Video I worked at collapsed.

On the other hand, I don't consider Brendan Scaub, Dana White and Alex Jones close personal friends, so I still think I've made better life choices.

While I agree that Joe shouldn't yell nearly as much as he does on broadcast the producers are fucking morons if they think telling Joe not to yell is going to make the commentary better. It's what dude does. Either keep him or cut him, but don't try to turn him in to Dom Cruz cuz it just won't work.

Prime example of the Joe Rogan demographic.
:p
isn't it nice when folks aren't allowed to have their opinion

Lots of good MMA commentators IMO
Joe is one of them but he is not head and shoulders above anybody...he is a midget

I prefer a fighter in that spot, with real in ring experience in Mixed Martial Arts
