Well, it's been a long standing tradition, Cain, GSP, Pettis, and many other champions have had long breaks in between fighting, when they had a belt in their possesion. It's really about people being salty when it comes to Conor, he lives in their heads. Meanwhile, we just saw him fight, while others had injuries, or other types of situations. Max is a champ regardless of all this.
All the people you mentioned only took time off to heal injuries, and foufgr fought the interim champs when they returned. That's a world of difference then killing yourself to make 145 to fight smaller men, then ballooning up to 170 for 2 of your next 3 fights because you don't want to lose the weight anymore.

He really does live in your head. He's a hard worker, entertaining fighter, no USADA bullshit, no cocaine bullshit or injury after injury. Seriously committed to combat sports. I guess that goes for Max Holloway as well. Good to be a fan of those guys...meanwhile you have these complainers... good luck with that man. I like Mike Perry as well, also the right fucking attitude, win or lose, you want to watch that guy.

Agreed. It may suck for us fans, but will be good for him in the long run. Champs are holding on to their belts now, and really taking control of their worth.
it's almost the only way to monetize it, stripping a champ because you don't want to pay him is a bad look for UFC brass, so we'll not gonna see that any time soon.
He spot on to sit out and see what he can pull out of it.

Agree to disagree on that one.
Invested doesn't have to mean they like a fighter for doing that kind of stuff. Many "invest" time and energy in the HATE of fighters like that. Look how many fans have Love or Hate relationships with Conor, The Diaz Brothers, Perry, Kos and Sonnen (back in the day). It works, like em or dislike them, those types of fighters make people feel. Proof is right there in front of all of us, count the number of threads on any given forum dedicated to such fighters compared to others who show NO personality.

Hardcore fans, yes. We're tuning in no matter what, so for us it's not a big deal.

I remember trying to get my older brother interested in MMA. He's a hardcore baseball fan, loves college football, watches the NBA, but never saw the appeal of MMA. I was staying with his family over a weekend and talked them into watching the UFC ppv with me that weekend. The card looked like guaranteed fireworks on paper, so I was sure one of the fights would catch his interest.

It was UFC 149. The card opened well enough, with Matt Riddle getting a submission win. Then 4 decisions in a row. And not overly exciting ones. Wall and stalls, inaction, and point fighting. He hasn't watched a fight since.

Now imagine a first time fan channel surfing, or stumbling across these weigh ins online, and pausing to see what's going on. They see Kim there walking across to shake Perry's hand, then he pulls that shit. We laugh, but a lot of people are going to just turn away and take that as validation that mixed martial artist are just mindless savages with no respect, no class, and no finesse. Fighters who just step into a cage and use 'sumo style wrestling" and brute strength to mindlessly beat the shit out of each other and never watch again.

The UFC probably fucked up by not resigning him before a title fight. I don't know why they would allow anyone to fight for a belt on the final fight of their contract. I think Max is wise for trying to get more money, but I think it will likely end in his leaving for Bellator.
I could be wrong, but I think weidman held out for his first fight against invincible Anderson
