Cormier? Who has he beat to deserve that? He's got a decent record..but FUK no.
Shit, just look at his accomplishments. Undefeated at HW, fighting much larger men that were on PED's (Barnett, Bigfoot, etc). Won the Strikeforce HW Grand Prix when they had the best HW division in MMA and he was still very green. Then comes over to the UFC, runs thru the LHW division beating guys like Hendo, Rumble (2x), Gus. The only guy he has lost to is the GOAT. So it's hard for me not to put Cormier in my Top 5. Put it this way, if Jon Jones (the GOAT) wasn't around...Cormier would retire undefeated as Strikeforce HW Grand Prix winner and UFC LHW champ. Not being able to beat the GOAT shouldn't tarnish his entire body of work.
And let's be real. What McGregor has done is impressive and has been great for MMA but he beat Holloway when Max was still relatively green (would love to see that rematch today), Poirier, Mendes, Diaz (who he also lost to), and Alvarez. Does that really justify GOAT status? Would you look at those 5 opponents and say he's ran thru murderer's row? I don't think so. Again, I respect what he's accomplished but his GOAT status is a bit over-exaggerated IMO. The timing of the match ups couldn't have worked out better for him and the UFC. Every guy he fought, sans Mendes, were perfect match ups for him...including Aldo, who Conor had so rattled he ran chin first into an exchange. He's fought one wrestler is his UFC career. I'd like to see him face (and beat) guys like Khabib, Ferguson, Barboza, etc before crowning him.
Look, BJ won titles in two different weight classes and I'm the biggest BJ fanboy on this planet. But even I recognize that timing had a lot to do with what he accomplished. He was fighting guys like Sherk, Florian, Joe Daddy, Sanchez. Sure his wins against Hughes were impressive, but if I look at his total body of work, even I have to admit that he isn't one of the GOAT. He's one of the greatest LW's of all-time and put the lighter weight divisions on the map. And he fought from FW to HW throughout his career, which is crazy and should be applauded. But that's as far it goes, as much as that pains me to say.
I have similar thoughts about Conor. His timing couldn't have been better. It's landed him favorable match ups...and good for him. But I just want to see him fight (and beat) guys in the Top 5 of the LW division...a dominant wrestler like Khabib...an elite kickboxer like Barboza...a well rounded guy like Ferguson, before I crown him.
Shit, I kind of have a problem putting Anderson in my Top 5 because of this very reason. During his run, he was beating guys like Lutter, Leites, Leben, Cote, etc. Outside of Belfort and Hendo...he didn't have to beat much. I just couldn't think of anyone else that deserved to be in there, so I put Anderson in there for longevity.
