I think technicalities should be avoided for a better sense of history. While my method - Jon Jones being the LW lineal champ - is obviously dumb, it would be equally silly to bring in missed weights, especially when the guy who wins is legitimately fighting at that weight and it's a rematch from when they both made weight.
That's a perfectly valid point. The rules I use for lineality come from those set out by The Ring magazine when they established guidelines naming official lineal champions in boxing. There used to be a great poster at the other place named whistleblower who schooled a lot of us on it back in the day.

In that paradigm, title changes were generally agreed to take place based on whether they were at weight and based on the official in ring result rather than overturned results after the fact. So for example, Jon Jones would remain LHW champ etc.

Interesting. It's good to have a system, and The Ring is a good one to go by, even if I disagree with the disqualifying technicality about both fighters having to make weight.

I can see why some rigidness is needed for consistency though - obviously this should be in play if it's a freak show fight where the opponent hasn't made the minimum weight and is actually in a lower weight class though.

But I think too much rigidity distorts rather than clarifies lineal progression.
