Serious question, why aren't Americans driving the big rigs anymore?
I'm an American and almost 30 years in the trucking industry. The hours suck. No home time. Pay hasn't kept up with inflation. Trucking isn't as "cool" as it was. Back in the 70s and 80s. Cheaper to get some non American no English drivers. Also swift, jb hunt and other big trucking companies. Have kept rates way down. I've always been a company driver. So this is just my 2 cents. From what I've seen and read.

I am a million miles accident free. With my current company. Average about 130,000 miles a year. Lord knows how many. Over my whole career.

There's a shortage of truckers... but I wouldn't suggest people start rushing toward that career... It will probably be one of the first areas that is going to be automated and very quickly.

There are many reasons. To not get into trucking. I'm not sold on the automation aspect. To many variables on the road. Lawyers already line up. Whenever their is an incidents involving trucks. A couple of bad wrecks and big settlements. Who knows then. I haul cars. The trucks won't load/unload themselves. Flatbed who's tarping the load? Food service. Who's running the product down the ramp? Maybe I'm shortsighted. Who knows 10-20 years. Maybe I'm way off.

I imagine that insurance is going to be higher for human driven vehicles vs. automated ones. I also think there are a lot of laws and regulations that are going to be put in place to make it go that direction as quickly as possible.
