6.5 million people bought Mayweather/McGregor, and everyone I personally know that watched did so because of their MMA fandom. The only thing killing MMA is politics and shitty promotion. That can be easily remedied if the right person decides they wanna fix it.

Nah. We used to go watch at the bar all the time during the "meteoric rise" era. The only thing that drags them back into the scene is the prospect of an unmissable fight.

Majority of buys was likely from the world of boxing fans. But there's plenty of us around to watch good MMA when it's made available. Main problem is the gap between big fights.
